Rhetoric and Scientia Civilis at the Royal Academy of Turku, 1777–1804
Henrik Gabriel Porthan was the professor of eloquence at the Royal Academy of Turku from 1777 until his death in 1804. During that period, he supervised 221 dissertations, approximately half of which he authored by himself. This article argues that Porthan and his students identified rhetoric as a part of political science and—focusing on notions such as civic duty, citizenship and patria—embraced Ciceronian rhetoric and civic philosophy typical …
Travellers’ Glory and the Habitability of the ‘Frozen Zone’, 1663–1737
The article explores four travel writings on early modern Lapland. The travelogues were written by Italian and French travellers—Francesco Negri (1623–1698), Jean-François Regnard (1655–1709), Pierre Louis Maupertuis (1698–1759) and Réginaud Outhier (1694–1774)—who visited the region between 1663 and 1737. The article focuses on the notions of habitability, glory and bravery, and suggests that besides curiosity and scientific exploration the jour…
Virtue and Civic Values in Early Modern Jesuit Education
The article suggests that by offering education in the studia humanitatis the Jesuits made an important contribution to early modern political culture. The Jesuit education facilitated the establishment of political rule or administration of civic affairs in harmony with Christian virtues, and produced generations of citizens who, while studying under the Jesuits, learned to identify piety with civic values. Isocrates’s phronesis and the Early Jesuits
The following article studies the connections between Isocrates’s idea of phronesis (pragmatic wisdom) and the early-modern Jesuit notions of rhetoric and prudence. The article develops previous research on Cicero’s influence on early Jesuits by emphasizing Isocrates’s importance in the history of rhetoric and civic philosophy. Cicero himself was influenced by Isocrates and, more to the point, Isocrates’s writings were widely read and taught by e…
Paolo Sarpi
This book is an intellectual biography of the Venetian historian and theologian Paolo Sarpi (1552-1623). It analyses Sarpi's natural philosophy, religious ideas and political thought. Kainulainen argues that Sarpi was influenced by Neostoicism, Neoepicureanism and the sixteenth-century scientific revolution; that Sarpi was a fideist and Christian mortalist who, while critical of the contemporary Church of Rome, admired the purity of the early chu…
Freedom and the Construction of Europe
Freedom, today perceived simply as a human right, was a continually contested idea in the early modern period. In Freedom and the Construction of Europe an international group of scholars explore the richness, diversity and complexity of thinking about freedom in the shaping of modernity. Volume 1 examines debates about religious and constitutional liberties, as well as exploring the tensions between free will and divine omnipotence across a cont…

From sense perception to natural affection
This article explores two different tendencies in the thought of Paolo Sarpi (1552-1623): the first of these is his rational stoicism, which considered passions false opinions and something that was best to subjugate to reason. The second is Sarpi's Christianity, which embraced natural affection for god and the government of Venice. The author sets out to establish which of the two tendencies was predominant in Sarpi: aloof Stoicism or passionate…
