La nuova Italia del Miracolo Economico
Crisis – What crisis? The jobless society and Italian cinema in the early 2000s
This article proposes a synthetic analysis and contextualization of the most significant, thought-provoking films made in Italy during the first decade of the twenty-first century which thematize or in other ways convey the circumstances of today’s growing social inequality. Such circumstances entail collective and individual trauma, loss of security and well-being in individuals and families, indeed an increase in family breakdown – in other wor…
Rilke contro le avanguardie
This contribution is an essay in Translation and Translation Studies, rather than a critical review article, and it is written in Italian. The reasons for both circumstances follow below. 1.to present to the Italian-reading public some specimens — 5 poems — from a new (as yet unpublished) translation into Italian of the modernist master of German-language poetry R. M. Rilke's Sonette an Orpheus (1922); and2.to illustrate to the Italian-reading pu…
Italian and World Poetry in Benigni's and Cerami's the Tiger and the Snow

Italian Cinema and Modern European Literatures
The history of cinema, and notably that of post-war Italian cinema, can only be understood adequately in the context of other contiguous cultural disciplines. World literature, including that of France, Germany, and Russia, played a key role in the development of post-war Italian film and the cinematic technique it has come to embody. Moving away from the usual modes of defining this period—a trajectory that begins with neorealism and ends with B…
Masters of Two Arts
Carlo Testa demonstrates that while pairings of famed directors and writers are commonplace in modern Italian cinema, the study of the interrelation between Italian cinema and European literature has been almost completely neglected in film scholarship.
Doktor Zhivago
The young wood below the embankment was still almost as bare as in winter. Only in the buds that spotted it all over, like drops of candle grease, there was something not in accord with the rest, something superfluous, some disturbance, perhaps dirt or an inflammation causing them to swell, and [this] disturbance, [this] superfluity and dirt were life [itself], which had already set the most forward of the trees on fire with its green leafy flame…
