  • Zhou Enlai

    Jian Chen, Chen Jian•BOOK•Zhou Enlai•2024

Zhou Enlai, China’s first premier, is overshadowed by Mao, but Zhou’s influence in his own time and since has been vast. Chen Jian shows Zhou using his political and bureaucratic skills and centralism to mitigate the damage caused by Mao’s radicalism and argues that Zhou created conditions for the post-Mao reforms that have made China a superpower.

  • The Cambridge History of the Vietnam War

When, how, and why did the Vietnam War begin? Although its end is dated April 30, 1975, there is no agreement as to when it began. This volume presents the scholarship that has flourished since the 1990s to situate the war and its origins within longer chronologies and larger interpretative perspe…

It is commonplace to read in many of the Israeli academic and quasi-academic works on Palestinian society that Israeli policies led to new economic and social openings for Palestinian women (Lavine 1982; Maoz 1984; Semyonov 1994, among others). The assessment immediately below reflects a typical account of how the Israeli administration modernized Palestinian women. 2018 selection and editorial matter, Chen Jian, Martin Klimke, Masha Kirasirova, …

Jian Chen, Chen Jian•ARTICLE•The Chinese Historical Review•2008•Cited by: 3

The years 1954-1955 witnessed visible changes in Beijing's representation of China's international policies. After its establishment in 1949, the People's Republic of China (PRC) appeared as a “revolutionary country” on the international scene, challenging the legitimacy of the existing international system controlled by Western imperialist powers—and the United States in particular. Mao Zedong and his comrades made it clear that a primary missio…

Did there exist a chance in 1949–50 for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the United States to reach an accommodation or, at least, to avoid a confrontation? Scholars who believe that Washington “lost a chance” to pursue a non-confrontational relationship with the CCP generally base their argument on two assumptions – that the Chinese Communists earnestly sought U.S. recognition to expedite their country's postwar economic reconstruction and …
