The Anti-Eschatological Elijah and the Reinterpretation of the “Day of YHWH” in Malachi 3
A major theme of Israel’s prophetic tradition is the concept of the coming “day of YHWH,” understood to be a divine intervention in history consisting of judgment and vindication. The concluding verses of Malachi (3:23–24) contain a striking appropriation of that prophetic tradition, associating it with the return of Elijah as an eschatological messenger. The consensus in scholarship on this passage is that this innovation is to be ascribed to es…
Tariffs and Growth
A large body of empirical research indicates that countries with low policy-induced trade barriers tend to enjoy rapid growth, ceteris paribus. In contrast, alternative theoretical models suggest that the relationship between trade barriers and growth may be contingent on the level of development. Employing a direct trade-barrier measure—ad valorem tariff rates—we find evidence of such a contingency: the marginal effect of tariffs on growth is de…
A Nonlinear Forecasting Model of GDP Growth
We develop a model of GDP growth under which regime changes are triggered stochastically by an observable tension index, constructed as the geometric sum of deviations of actual GDP growth from a corresponding sustainable rate. Within expansionary regimes, the tension index tends to increase, which heightens the probability of a regime change. Given a regime change, the process becomes reversed, and the tension index begins to decline along a new…

A Bayesian Approach to Calibration
We develop a Bayesian approach to calibration that enables the incorporation of uncertainty regarding the parameters of the theoretical model under investigation. Our procedure involves the specification of prior distributions over parameter values, which in turn induce distributions over the statistical properties of artificial data simulated from the model. These distributions are compared with their empirical counterparts to assess the model's…
Estimating Moving Average Parameters
We analyze posterior distributions of the moving average parameter in the first-order case and sampling distributions of the corresponding maximum likelihood estimator. Sampling distributions “pile up” at unity when the true parameter is near unity; hence if one were to difference such a process, estimates of the moving average component of the resulting series would spuriously tend to indicate that the process was overdifferenced. Flat-prior pos…
