‘Nous sommes tous nés nomades.’ The Pictorial Compasses of Fromentin’s Dominique and Flaubert’s Salammbô of 1862
This article takes its lead from Barbara Wright’s simple yet profound literary-critical imperative, ‘“Only Connect” ... ’ (2010), to reflect Fromentin’s Dominique critically in Flaubert’s Salammbô – and vice versa – by means of the aesthetic compasses of critical reader response in 1862, and their authors’ earlier travel writing. In therefore arguing by example for renewed examination of important works in word and image in Second Empire France t…
Crossings and Interconnections
In this special issue we honour the remarkable academic career and prolific scholarship of Barbara Wright (1935–2019) who significantly impacted the field of nineteenth-century French studies. Her
‘In from the Periphery’? Re-framing the Reach of the Nineteenth-Century French Literary-Scientific Imagination
By investigating what it calls the literary-scientific imagination, this article refocuses critical attention towards new nineteenth-century French scientific knowledge in texts outside the realist ‘canon’. Chateaubriand’s Atala (1801) reveals French natural scientific nomenclatures illuminating significant, non-Western, knowledge. Scientific discovery in ‘provincial’ France proves discipline- and genre-defining in Adrien Cranile’s little-studied…
Quality Improvement Project to Improve Screening for Tobacco Use in Adolescent Inpatients at a Children’s Hospital
Tobacco use begins in adolescence for the majority of smokers. The purpose of this study was to increase screening and reporting of tobacco use in hospitalized adolescents at a tertiary care children's hospital. We completed a nursing focus group to understand challenges and completed four iterative Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, which included: (1) in-person nursing education regarding tobacco use screening, (2) addition of an e-cigarette-specific sc…
Women peers in the scientific realm: Sarah Bowdich (Lee)'s expert collaborations with Georges Cuvier, 1825–33
The accepted rule for women contributing to nineteenth-century science before 1851 was that they could play only secondary roles in its production and authorship—as translators, illustrators, popularizers—and these by virtue of kinship or marriage to eminent scientists in the field or the laboratory. Sarah Bowdich (Lee) (1791–1856) presents an important amendment to this rule. As an explorer of West Africa on an equal scientific footing with her …

A Comédie (sur)humaine
The crucial defamiliarization of 19th‐century French science set up via the Alexandrian Schools in Part Two allows Hilarion to return as intermediary/antagonist once more, this time as commentator‐double of Étienne Geoffroy Saint‐Hilaire as Starr has argued. This chapter however fills crucial gaps in Starr's arguments by elucidating previously unacknowledged 19th‐century intertexts and their importance for tableau five. Its parades of Nature gods…
Flaubert's Tentation: Remapping Nineteenth-Century French Histories of Religion and Science
This is the first comprehensive study in English of Flaubert's least well-known masterpiece, the final version of his 'Tentation de saint Antoine' (1874). If thanks to Michel Foucault calling it a 'fantastic library' it has the reputation of arcane erudition, its various manuscript versions putting complex creative writing processes on display have made it also the paradigm work for the specialist genetic critic. Both reputations distance the ord…
Pursuing Proper Protocol: Sarah Bowdich's Purview of the Sciences of Exploration
Attempting to correct, in small part, the invisibility of women participating in nineteenth-century science, this article brings to attention the work of the scientist, artist, and writer Mrs. Sarah Bowdich. Bowdich employed the vehicle of biography to overcome the obstacles that discouraged women from entering scientific disciplines, publishing her biography of the French scientist Georges Cuvier and her report of T. Edward Bowdich's exploration…

In the prefatory remarks, Jean-Yves Laurichesse pinpoints the rich resonance of the title of Simon's latest …

Reading Autobiography: A Guide for Interpreting Life Narratives
Autobiographical writing is redefining the meaning of narrative, as the recent explosion of memoirs by writers such as Frank McCourt, Mary Karr, Dave Eggers, and Kathryn Harrison suggests. But what's involved in bringing these narratives into the classroom-in creative writing, cultural studies, women's and ethnic studies, and social science and literature courses? How may instructors engage the philosophical, historical, social, and theoretical c…

La Tentation de Saint Antoine
La Tentation de Saint Antoine (TSA) explores the male self and the structures of the Cartesian mind. The central questions of the cogito, whether they concern subjectivity or what is knowable, come from the standpoint of rational scepticism, but in Descartes's case, with the ultimate aim to prove the existence of God. In and behind TSA lies the dual intertext of both Discours de la Méthode and Méditations, not so much as two books among many in t…
Flaubert: Writing the Masculine
"Flaubert: Writing the Masculine examines the masculine in the six very different literary contexts which are Flaubert's fictions. His characters, male and female, are reassessed for their masculinity: Baudelaire's famous view of Emma Bovary as 'masculine', like other critical idees recues which have propped up a canonical Flaubert, finds a new interpretation within the wider discussion of the book, as does the term 'masculine' itself. While it i…
