Negotiating tensions around new forms of academic writing
Almost every aspect of an academic’s role involves specialised forms of writing, and the range of digital platforms used to produce this has increased. Core genres such as the journal article and monograph remain central, but the ways they are now commonly produced via file-sharing software and online submission systems are changing them. Digital media also allows academics to stay up to date with their field, connect with others, and share resea…

Redefining Vernacular Literacies in the Age of Web 2.0
In this article, we examine the characteristics of vernacular literacies on Web 2.0, focusing on the writing activities performed on the photo-sharing site Flickr.com. This site provides people with many possibilities for writing, ranging from individual tags to extensive profiles. The study investigates these forms of writing to address questions about people's contemporary everyday literacy practices: the extent to which these are new practices…

The paper focuses on the communication practices of a group of people travelling from Norway to Britain in a hired coach. Drawing on the approaches of literacy studi…
Beyond Communities of Practice: Language Power and Social Context
The concept of 'communities of practice' (Lave and Wenger 1991, Wenger 1998) has become an influential one in education, management, and social sciences in recent years. This book consists of a series of studies by linguists and educational researchers, examining and developing aspects of the concept which have remained relatively unexplored. Framings provided by theories of language-in-use, literacy practices, and discourse extend the concept, b…
Destocking as a Drought-mitigation Strategy: Clarifying Rationales and Answering Critiques
The idea of externally assisted emergency destocking of pastoralists has gained currency in recent years: increasing the incentives for pastoralists to sell animals, or removing the constraints to selling animals in the early stages of drought. We identify two separate rationales put forward by proponents of destocking: environmental benefits and purchasing power/welfare benefits. We consider whether specific recent critiques of 'new range ecolog…

The Theaetetus on how we Think
I argue that Plato's purpose in the discussion of false belief in the Theaetetus is to entertain and then to reject the idea that thinking is a kind of mental grasping. The interpretation allows us to make good sense of Plato's discussion of 'other-judging' (189c-190e), of his remarks about mathematical error (195d-196c), and most importantly, of the initial statement of the puzzle about falsity (188a-c). That puzzle shows that if we insist on co…

The acquisition of the voicing contrast in Spanish: A phonetic and phonological study of word-initial stop consonants
This paper reports on the acquisition of the voicing contrast in Mexican–Spanish word-initial stops. In Study 1, three monolingual children were recorded every two weeks for seven months, beginning when the children were about 1; 7. In Study 2, four monolingual children about 3; 10 were recorded once or twice. Two analyses were done. Instrumental analysis of the stop productions revealed that not even by age 3; 10 were the children consistently d…
The acquisition of the voicing contrast in English: A study of voice onset time in word-initial stop consonants
This paper reports on a longitudinal study of the acquisition of the voicing contrast in American English word-initial stop consonants, as measured by voice onset time. Four monolingual children were recorded at two-week intervals, beginning when the children were about 1; 6. Data provide evidence for three general stages: (1) the child has no contrast; (2) the child has a contrast but one that falls within the adult perceptual boundaries of one …

An Instrumental Analysis of the Voicing Contrast in Word-Initial Stops in the Speech of Four-Year-Old English-Speaking Children
This paper reports on an investigation of the voice-onset-time (VOT) characteristics of word-initial stops produced by four four-year-old children. Instrumental analysis of the children's spontaneous speech showed that they had distinct distributions for voiced and voiceless stops at all three places of articulation and that there was very little overlap between voiced and voiceless cognates. Comparison of words uttered in isolation with words ut…

The Use of Role Playing Techniques as an Instructional Aid in Teaching about Dying, Death, and Bereavement
Role playing exercises are useful in teaching health care professionals about issues related to dying, death, and bereavement. This paper includes examples of role playing vignettes related to attitudes toward death, the dynamics of family interaction in the context of life-threatening illness, the consideration of an ethical issue, displaced anger toward the caregiver, the role of personality traits in adaptation to illness, and consideration of…

Teaching about Dying and Death in a Multidisciplinary Student Group
A number of dimensions which emerged in instructing a multidisciplinary class of medical students, nursing students, social work students and theology students about dying and death are discussed in this paper. As the group process proved to be the single most important aspect of the multidisciplinary course, primary attention is devoted to this phenomenon as it evolved in the class. The course provided a laboratory in which students from varying…
