    Open Access•Jacques Bres, Emmanuelle Labeau•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2022

This paper deals with the grammaticalisation of venir into an aspectual auxiliary of immediate anteriority, against the traditional approach (Gougenheim 1971 [1929]) according to which venir de + inf, would express recent past and so would be a temporal auxiliary. On the basis of the (revised) Reichenbachian model, it shows that venir de + inf bears upon the relationship between R and E (aspect) and not on the relationship between R and S (time).…

    Emmanuelle Labeau, Anne Dister•ARTICLE•Corpus•2016

Open Access•Hélène Blondeau, Emmanuelle Labeau•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of…•2016

L'analyse distributionnel…

  • Aller et venir

    Jacques Bres, Emmanuelle Labeau•ARTICLE•Langue française•2013

  • The narrative construction va + infinitive in Contemporary French. Online Appendix

    Jacques Bres, Emmanuelle Labeau•ARTICLE•Diachronica•2013

In Old and Middle French (12th–16th centuries), va [“goes”] + inf was used in narrations in the past. A similar usage seems to have reappeared and be spreading today. However, the old construction combined with past tenses whereas the new one is found only with forms anchored in present and future. We argue that the contemporary construction derives not from the old one, but from a metanarrative construction. On the basis of its future interpreta…

  • French Television Talk

    Emmanuelle Labeau•ARTICLE•International Journal of Corpus…•2006

On the basis of a transcribed French television corpus made of two news bulletins, two chat shows and one literary programme recorded in February 2003, this paper explores the claim that passé simple (PS) may still be used in prepared oral discourse (Pfister 1974). The corpus does not provide support for that use on television, but it seems to suggest a shift from temporal to aspectual features in French television talk: a perfective presentation…

    Emmanuelle Labeau•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2000

  • Is French in Belgium More Susceptible to English Influence

Emmanuelle Labeau•ARTICLE•Current Issues In Language and…•1999

The French language has been progressively moulded through contact with neighbouring languages. However, the Anglo-Saxon tidal wave that followed the Second World War has provoked numerous reactions of defence and promotion of French. This paper studies the specificities of the link to English in French-speaking Belgium. First, it seems that from a linguistic point of view, French in Belgium shows a higher degree of tolerance towards English on l…

Emmanuelle Labeau•ARTICLE•Current Issues In Language and…•1999
