Loneliness and Expanding Social Ties in Later Life
Greater attention to the role of loneliness in older adults' motivations for making new ties or rekindling dormant ties will broaden our understanding of social network changes in later life
Sexual Risk Management in the Clinton White House
Elements of Success
The Racial Contract, educational equity, and emancipatory ideological critique
Charles Mills' major text, The Racial Contract, is a radical liberal intervention in contractarian political philosophy. It argues that in the US today, the social contract ideologically (mis-)represents itself as a colorblind agreement that exemplifies our "post-racist" conditions. Mills holds that once we pierce the misrepresentations that characterize this legitimation discourse, we can see that the majority of whites tend to subscribe, either…

The ANSTO Isotope Cycling System
A number of electronic systems are used on the ANTARES accelerator at ANSTO to implement its fast cycling accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) capability. The fast cycling system was originally installed and commissioned in 1993 and has recently been updated. This paper describes the more significant of the electronic systems, such as the controller (“sequencer”), the high-voltage power supply (“bouncer”), the fast electrostatic beam chopper, and …
Laclau and Mouffe
Laclau and Mouffe: The Radical Democratic Imaginary is the first full-length overview of the important work of Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe. Anna Marie Smith clearly shows how Laclau and Mouffe's work has brought Gramscian, poststructuralist and psychoanalytic perspectives to revitalize traditional political theory. With clarity and insight, she shows how they have constructed a highly effective theory of identity formation and power relatio…
A 5th Century bc Iron Age Chariot Burial from Newbridge, Edinburgh
The remains of the first Iron Age chariot burial in Britain outside Yorkshire were discovered during the winter of 2000–1, near the Bronze Age burial mound of Huly Hill, at Newbridge, Edinburgh. Excavated by Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd with the assistance of the National Museums Scotland, the chariot proved unique beyond just its burial location. The Newbridge chariot was buried intact, a method consistent with the burial practices of Continent…
Should Liberal Feminists Support “Paternafare” and Welfare Reform? A Capabilities-Oriented Analysis
When policymakers invoke liberal democratic tropes while endorsing welfare reform, and, in particular, “paternafare”—the mandatory child support and paternity identification requirement—are they contradicting themselves? Can paternafare be defended in liberal democratic terms? In this article, I propose to set aside, for the sake of argument, my own radical egalitarian commitments and to speak directly to the liberal feminist in her own terms. Be…
Identity Before Identity Politics by Linda Nicholson
Reproductive Technology, Family Law, and the Postwelfare State
This article is a critical discussion of three landmark decisions handed down by the California Supreme Court in 2005: Elisa B. v. Superior Court, K.M. v. E.G., and Kristine H. v. Lisa R. In each of these cases, the court decided that where a lesbian couple is raising dependent children born as a result of artificial insemination, the children’s biological mother and social mother are both legal parents and that in the event of the breakup of the…
Response to Kathleen R. Arnold's review of Welfare Reform and Sexual Regulation
Let me begin by thanking Kathleen R. Arnold for her comments and Jeffrey Isaac for the invitation to participate in this exchange. Clearly, Kathleen and I are both indebted to the Marxist and Foucauldian traditions. For my part, however, I find the Gramscian insistence on the historically specific, complex, and contradictory character of every historical bloc and hegemonic institution more compelling than the social theories that envision the soc…
Critical Dialogue
In her timely and provocative book, Kathleen Arnold examines the super-exploitation and disenfranchisement of the “new working class”—low-income immigrants, African Americans, and women workers—and utilizes these phenomena as a catalyst for sharpening our critical understanding of American governance in our globalizing conditions. She contends that the neoliberal state is deploying deregulation and massive policing interventions simultaneously. T…
Neoliberalism, welfare policy, and feminist theories of social justice
An overview of the feminist theory literature on welfare policy and politics is presented. This introductory essay places a particular emphasis on the works that fall within the political sociology and normative political philosophy genres. In a lengthy digression, the article offers a tribute to the work of Iris Marion Young. It examines the centrality of her thinking about distribution, cultural marginalization, the welfare state bureaucracy, t…
Welfare Reform and Sexual Regulation
Inspired by the political interventions of feminist women of color and Foucauldian social theory, Anna Marie Smith explores the scope and structure of the child support enforcement, family cap, marriage promotion, and abstinence education measures that are embedded within contemporary United States welfare policy. Presenting original legal research and drawing from historical sources, social theory, and normative frameworks, the author argues tha…

Progress in Radiocarbon Target Preparation at the Antares AMS Centre
We present routine methods of target preparation for radiocarbon analysis at the ANTARES Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Centre, as well as recent developments which have decreased our procedural blank level and improved our ability to process small samples containing less than 200 μg of carbon. Routine methods of 14 C sample preparation include sample pretreatment, CO 2 extraction (combustion, hydrolysis and water stripping) and conversion t…

The Politicization of Marriage in Contemporary American Public Policy
The sexuality politics terrain in the United States is currently marked by a complex and contradictory set of developments‐non-traditional family structures are becoming more common, popular opinion is moving in a more tolerant direction, and the lesbian and gay rights movement has enjoyed some victories, but conservative family values and patriarchal heterosexual marriage have been vigorously promoted by influential right-wing social movements a…

New Right Discourse on Race and Sexuality

What Is Pornography
The Campaign Against Pornography and Censorship (CPC) is a British group which was established in April 1989. Its activities can be described in terms of four projects. First, the CPC has engaged in a media campaign in which it has attempted to demonstrate the direct links between pornography and violence against women. It has won a largely favourable response from the 'quality' daily and Sunday newspapers, and its co-ordinator, Cathy Itzen, co-a…
