  • A bridge over troubled water? Flood insurance and the governance of climate change adaptation

    Open Access•Hampton, Sam Hampton et al.•ARTICLE•Geoforum•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 18

Floods are one of the most commonly occurring natural hazard events globally, and present a significant threat to the UK from climate change. Operating since 2016, Flood Re is an industry-government initiative, set up with the goal of reforming the flood insurance market in order to provide universal, affordable cover for UK households. Principally providing reinsurance services to insurers and including mutualisation arrangements, it aims to wit…

    Open Access•Ronald Andersen, Robert Andersen et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2006•Cited by: 39•References: 44

This study assesses whether civic association activity has declined in four Western democracies: Canada, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Influential accounts of decreasing civic engagement in the United States lead to the expectation of similar patterns in the other three nations. The authors test this hypothesis using data from time-use surveys of adult national samples for the mid-1960s to the late 1990s. One major f…

  • Do High School Athletes Earn More Pay? Youth Sport Participation and Earnings as an Adult

James E Curtis, James Curtis et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2003•Cited by: 10•References: 14

This paper reports on tests of relationships between participation in organized sport as a youth and earned income in adulthood. The data are drawn from a sample survey of adult Canadians. The results, both before and after appropriate controls, show that those who participated in organized sport as a youth tended to have higher annual earned incomes as adults than those who did not participate in this way. The relationships are stronger and more…

James E Curtis, James Curtis et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•1999•Cited by: 8•References: 3

This paper presents findings on the relationship between high school sport participation and involvement in sport as adults. The data are provided by a survey of a large representative national sample of adult Canadians. For different age subgroups among women and men, we tested the school sport experiences hypothesis that sport involvement during the high school years contributes to later adult involvement in sport. The measurement of sport invo…

  • The Origins of American Individualism: Reconsidering the Historical Evidence

Open Access•Edward Grabb, Edward G Grabb et al.•ARTICLE•The Canadian Journal of Sociology•1999•Cited by: 2

This paper reconsiders S. M. Lipset's well-known thesis that origins of America's dominant value system can be directly traced to formative events of Revolution. Our specific concern is with one core value, individualism, and suggestion that individualist ideas and beliefs were widely held in population in Revolutionary era. A central claim of present paper is that crux of Lipset's depiction of value system, or American Creed, is a particular ver…

  • Gender and perceived pay entitlement: Testing for effects of experience with income

Serge Desmarai, Serge Desmarais et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Cited by: 3

This article reports on 2 studies where variations on a research design from the literature on gender and perceived pay entitlement were used to test for effects of past pay experience and salience of the pay experience for the participants. In Study 1, level of previous income was not a predictor of self-payment behavior for women or men, and men allocated more pay to themselves than did women. In Study 2, women and men did not differ on perceiv…

    Douglas Baer, James E Curtis et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1995•References: 17

This paper presents a test of S.M. Lipset's thesis that Americans are less respectful or accepting of authority than people from Canada and from two other English-speaking democracies: Australia and Great Britain. We use data from World Values Survey, 1981–83, to compare adult samples from the four populations, with separate analyses for English Canada and French Canada. Twenty-one dependent variables are employed, measuring beliefs about authori…

The analyses test hypotheses derived from the argument that disengagement from elite-level sport leads to various stress-induced negative consequences. The three primary dependent variables, suggested by the previous literature, are measures of life satisfaction, employmen…

Recent research has shown that there are “death dips” for suicide around major ceremonial occasions, and for certain public holidays in particular. This research suggests that the suicide-dip phenomenon is caused by increased social integration associated with such occasions. Elsewhere in the literature, sociological interpretations of major sport events indicate that they, too, serve as ceremonial occasions and play an integrative role in societ…
