Female friends’ holiday experiences in heterotopia
While the travel experiences of women have received some attention, there is scope for further exploration of the relationship between holiday spaces and the impact they have on females’ experiences. Drawing from narrative interviews, and informed by the Foucauldian concept of heterotopia, this paper explores the tourism experiences of female friends on the island of Ada Bojana, Montenegro. The findings reveal that the island’s environment facili…

Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with the Sierra Leonean community in London, England, accessing the feelings and meanings of the tourists. A new materialist governance paradigm for tourism destinations
Until the recent outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the growth of tourism had confronted many destinations with policy decisions that had impacted regional ecosystems and the quality of life of their resident population. To counter the threats driven by dominant tourism growth models, a number of tourism scholars have called for revisiting the philosophical foundation upon which tourism activities are developed. Informed by debates in philosophy …
Existential hapax as tourist embodied transformation
This research note introduces the concept of existential hapax; a concept elaborated by French philosopher Michel Onfray, which contributes to understanding transformative experiences. Three phases characterise an existential hapax: a maturation phase, an intense embodied experience during which the old uneasy self crumbles to dust and ataraxia. It is argued that the concept of existential hapax is different from milder transformative tourism exp…

Quality relationships are fundamental to human well-being. Friendships are voluntary relationships between autonomous individuals that can shed light on how bonding and intimacy are experienced in tourism environments. Adopting a qualitative, humanist approach, this article explores the topic of friendship in tourism. Through a thematic analysis of 12 in-depth interviews, we examine how friendships are experienced by Serbian young to middle-age a…
Envisioning the futures of cultural tourism
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the future of tourism is a much-debated topic both in academic and non-academic circles with commentators expounding contrasting perspectives. This conceptual paper contributes to such debates and aims at envisioning plausible futures of cultural tourism, in particular. For that purpose, we first discuss cultural tourism trends and the future scenarios available in the literature. Then, we articulate three cu…
Love in Tourist Motivation and Satisfaction
Despite limited recent contributions, explorations of the human emotion of love are underexplored in tourism studies. Love can be defined as both companionship (such as friendship) and as passion (romance and sexual connection). The aim of this article was to explore how the concept of love can be integrated into tourist motivation and satisfaction research. With this aim in mind, a literature review of tourist motivation, satisfaction, and types…
