Statistical EOF analysis of spatiotemporal glacier mass-balance variability
An Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) variance analysis was performed to map in detail the spatiotemporal variability in individual stake mass-balances (ba) on Mittivakkat Gletscher (MG) – in a region where at present five out of ~20.000 glaciers have mass-balance observations. The EOF analysis suggested that observed ba was summarized by two modes: EOF1 and EOF2 represented 80% (significant) and 6% (insignificant) of the explained variance, res…
Climate-driven fluctuations in freshwater flux to Sermilik Fjord, East Greenland, during the last 4000 years
The freshwater runoff from the glaciated and snow-covered Sermilik Fjord catchment, SE Greenland, was estimated at annual resolution for the period 1900–2008 and at decadal resolution for the past four millennia. Our simulations were forced with available meteorological station data (1900–2008) and Greenland ice core estimated temperature data (1899 bc–ad 1980) from Dye3 and GISP2. Time series of estimated ice discharge (2000–2009) for the three …
Hydrology, sediment transport and water resources of Ammassalik Island, SE Greenland
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(1):73–95, 2008 A review and a synthesis of results from previous investigations are presented. New studies and results from the Mittivakkat Glacier catchment are used in an attempt to upscale results to other catchments on Ammassalik Island, SE Greenland. A snow-evolution modelling system: Snow Model, together with the hydrological model: NAM, were used to simulate the water balance component…

Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(1):51–72, 2008 The present-day climate in the Mittivakkat Glacier catchment (65°N), Southeast Greenland, is investigated spatiotemporally based on time series (13 years, 1994–2006) and standard synoptic climate data from the meteorological station in Tasiilaq (Ammasslik), covering 109 years (1898–2006). Within the catchment, meteorological conditions are monitored at the coast (Station Coast,…

An automatic meteorological station has been operating at the Arctic Station (69°15'N, 53°31'W) in West Greenland since 1990. This paper summarizes meteorological parameters during 1997, including snow and sea ice cover, ground temperatures and active layer development, and presents comments on the local permafrost thickness. In March 1997 an automatic climate and water balance station was established on the peninsula Skallingen, 55°30'N, 8°15'E.…
Suspended Sediment Yield from the Ansager Å river basin, Denmark
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 98: 38–45. Water samples have been collected since 1969, at the Lavborg Bridge gauging station, on the river Ansager Å in South-West Jutland. Different regression equations of concentration versus discharge have been tested. The regression equations are used together with daily discharges to compute the daily suspended loads. Comparisons between measured and computedloads for different periods wh…
