  • Salinity changes in the central Baltic Sea (NW Europe) over the last 10 000 years

    Open Access•Kay-Christian Emeis, Kay‐Christian Emeis•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005

While it is acknowledged that an incorrect age datum was used to construct the depth-age relationship for the lower part of the core in question, the conclusions of the paper, which related to salinity changes of the last 10 000 years, are unaffected

  • Salinity changes in the central Baltic Sea (NW Europe) over the last 10000 years

    Open Access•Kay-Christian Emeis, Kay‐Christian Emeis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Cited by: 21•References: 4

We attempt a reconstruction of salinity levels of the central Baltic Sea based on diatom assemblages, the isotopic composition of organic matter and sedimentological expression of anoxia over the last 10 000 years. We use the data to investigate the dependence of salinity levels on climate evolution and isostasy. Changes in salinity of surface and deep waters were most pronounced from 8400 to approximately 5000 cal. BP. Density stratification bet…

  • Holocene palaeoclimate records over Europe and the North Atlantic

    Open Access•Kay-Christian Emeis, Kay‐Christian Emeis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This Special Issue of The Holocene contains 16 research papers based on a symposium at the 11th International Meeting of the European Union of Geosciences held in Strasbourg in April 2001. The aim of the symposium was a state-of-the-art assessment of empirical studies of postglacial marine and terrestrial climatic archives and their integration with numerical climate models. This editorial places the individual papers in the broader context of na…

  • The Toba Volcanic Event and Interstadial/Stadial Climates at the Marine Isotopic Stage 5 to 4 Transition in the Northern Indian Ocean

    Open Access•Hartmut Schulz, Kay-Christian Emeis et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2002

The Toba volcanic event, one of the largest eruptions during the Quaternary, is documented in marine sediment cores from the northeastern Arabian Sea. On the crest of the Murray Ridge and along the western Indian continental margin, we detected distinct concentration spikes and ash layers of rhyolithic volcanic shards near the marine isotope stage 5–4 boundary with the chemical composition of the “Youngest Toba Tuff.” Time series of the U k′ 37 -…

  • Sedmentation in the Central Baltic Sea as Viewed by Non-Destructive Pb-210-dating

    Helmar Kunzendorf, Kay-Christian Emeis et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•1998•Cited by: 7•References: 3

Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 98:1–9. A non-destructive gamma-spectrometric method was used to assay the sedimentation in the central Baltic Sea. Three cores from the Gotland Deep with water depths exceeding 230 m showed relatively high Pb-210 and Cs-137 but relatively little variation between cores in the curves for unsupported Pb-210. A constant rate of supply (CRS) modelling of the data revealed that there is a tendency of…

  • Sea-Surface Temperatures and the History of Monsoon Upwelling in the Northwest Arabian Sea during the Last 500,000 Years

    Open Access•Kay-Christian Emeis, Kay‐Christian Emeis et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

Arabian Sea sediments record changes in the upwelling system off Arabia, which is driven by the monsoon circulation system over the NW Indian Ocean. In accordance with climate models, and differing from other large upwelling areas of the tropical ocean, a 500,000-yr record of productivity at ODP Site 723 shows consistently stronger upwelling during interglaciations than during glaciations. Sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) reconstructed from the al…
