Progressive Business
Today, an increasing number of researchers, citizens, politicians, civil organizations, activists, and corporations are concerned with questions such as: Can the financial rationality of firms be constrained by social concerns? Can the market be reformed 'from within'? Starting in the post-Civil War period of American industrialization, the book traces the emergence of ideas about reforming businesses in the American context, and the ideological …
Selected elements, PCBs, and PAHs in sediments of the North Sea—Baltic Sea transition zone
Geografisk Tidsskrift—Danish Journal of Geography 109(1):81–94, 2009 A total of 63 sediment samples were collected in the North Sea—Baltic Sea transition zone using hydraulically damped box-corer. Analysis of the top one cm sediments shows a north to south trend in Li, Ca and methylated PAHs suggesting transport of these elements and micro pollutants from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. The sediment content of a high C/N ratio reflects preferent…
Suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the North Sea-Baltic Sea transition
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(2):37–47, 2008 The present study describes the spatial distribution of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the North Sea—Baltic Sea transition in autumn 2002 based on cruises in August, September, and October. The cruises comprised CTD and optical backscatter measurements supplemented with water sampling and determination of SPM concentrations. Each cruise covered 4 days whereby a close to …
Composition and size distributions of local and advected sediment trapped over a tidal flat during moderate and storm conditions
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 106(1):1–11, 2006 Vertical profiles of settling rates in an array of traps trapping suspended matter on a micro tidal flat indicated a large vertical resuspension flux up to about 1 m above the bed during moderate conditions. Size distributions of trapped material were used to fingerprint the origin of the trapped material. The lowermost trap always contained samples with bimodal distributions. A…
Total sediment budget of a transgressive barrier-spit, Skallingen, SW Denmark
Average sea-level rise in the northern part of the Danish Wadden Sea has been 1.3 mm a−1 during the last 100 years but during the last 25 years a rise of 4.2 mm a−1 was observed. Concurrent with the recent sea-level rise the Skallingen barrier spit has migrated landward by 3–5 m a−1. Long term sediment budgets for each of the morphological units involved in the migration are reviewed (e.g. onshore in the shore face +90.000 m3 a−1, longshore -641.…
Sediment transport across a tidal divide in the Danish Wadden Sea
Water and sediment transport were measured and calculated during a two months period on three locations at a 3 km long tidal divide in the Danish Wadden Sea. The water transport was flood dominated in the largest channel, almost neutral in the smaller channel and ebb dominated on the tidal flat. The tidal currents were short and strong during flood tide and long lasting but weak during ebb tide at all three stations. This tidal asymmetry caused t…
Tidal and meteorological induced nutrient (N, P) dynamics in the micro-tidal Ho Bugt, Danish Wadden Sea
Tidal and meteorological induced variations in nutrient dynamics are important at all depth intervals in the Ho Bugt estuary. In the tidal channels, nitrate concentrations may vary ±20% and total nitrogen concentrations even more due to sedimentation/resuspension effects during the tidal cycle. On tidal flats, nutrient and carbon contents of the deposited material depend strongly on meteorological conditions and may vary 0.7% TC, 0.1% TN and 0.4%…

The aim of the issue is to present the current state of knowledge on Danish Wadden Sea dynamics and morphology. This editorial places the individual papers in the broader context of natural variability and anthropogenic impact on the Wadden Sea environmen…
Role of landscape parameters in riverine run-off, and sediment and organic matter yield on Disko Island, West Greenland
Measurements of discharge and suspended sediment and organic matter yield from nine different drainage basins on the island Disko in central West Greenland were carried out in the period 19–30 July 1997. A series of landscape properties (glacier cover, altitude, slope, aspect and vegetation cover) were measured for each drainage basin from a digital elevation model and a satellite image. Principal Component Analysis and regression statistics have…

Investigation of a modern glacimarine sedimentary environment in the fjord Kuannersuit Sulluat, Disko, West Greenland
A 56 cm long sediment core from Kuannersuit Sulluat, a fjord on the island Disko, West Greenland is used to infer modern sedimentation rates and describe the sedimentary environment. The fjord abuts a catchment area dominated by a recently surging glacier (1995–1999). Analyses of the core included magnetic susceptibility, x-radiographs and grain size analysis. From these analyses it is concluded that deposition takes place both through sediment s…
Colonisation of Spartina on a tidal water divide, Danish Wadden Sea
The spread of Spartina on a tidal water divide has been followed in subsequent aerial photos. Spartina first appeared in the area in 1964, it spread rapidly to 1976. From 1976 to 1988 a significant die-back is observed. This die-back was more than recovered in 1995. Apart from the tidal range, no single physical factor (number of storm surges, rise in mean sea level, temperature) in itself appears to account for the spread. The die-back period ha…

The Laberex chamber for studying the critical shear stress for fine-grained sediment
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 99: 1–7, 1999 A new portable instrument, the Laberex chamber—LAB oratory ERosional EXperiments—for studies of the "fluff layer" and sediment critical shear stress is described. The chamber consists of a cylindric plexiglass tube with an inner diameter of 84 mm. A four-bladed impeller connected to a motor is placed in the centre of the chamber. Rotation of the impeller induces resuspension. Light …
Resuspension, Sediment Fluxes, and Suspended Sediment Diffusion Coefficients under Wave and Current Forcing in Two Coastal Environments
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 98: 10–19. A stainless steel tripod equipped with five sediment traps placed at 0.35 m intervals above the seabed was deployed both in wave and current dominated shallow water environments. The length of tripod deployments varied between three and seven days. Sedimentation fluxes during resuspension in the wave-dominated environment ranged from 24.1 g m−2 day−1 at 1.75 m to 36.4 g m−2 day−1 at 0.…
Sedmentation in the Central Baltic Sea as Viewed by Non-Destructive Pb-210-dating
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 98:1–9. A non-destructive gamma-spectrometric method was used to assay the sedimentation in the central Baltic Sea. Three cores from the Gotland Deep with water depths exceeding 230 m showed relatively high Pb-210 and Cs-137 but relatively little variation between cores in the curves for unsupported Pb-210. A constant rate of supply (CRS) modelling of the data revealed that there is a tendency of…
Nutrient Dynamics in Southwestern Kattegat, Scandinavia
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 97: 1–10, 1997. The nutrient transport through southwestern Kattegat was predicted for a 4 year period using the numerical, hydrodynamic model “MIKE12”. Model results were validated through direct measurements of nutrient concentrations in the study area, and through measurements of total-P and total-N deposition and resuspension rates. The local terrestrial supply of nutrients makes up only 2–5%…
Coastal Morphodynamics at Skallingen, SW Denmark

This paper describes some preliminary results from a field experiment on suspended sediment transport and cross-shore profile evolution in an environment subjected to storm surges. The experiment was conducted during the fall of 1994 at the barrier beach of Skallingen, SW Denmark. Data were collected over several tidal cycles comprising low through moderately-high offshore energy conditions. During the …
Nutrients and Organic Matter in Southern Kattegat—Western Baltic Sea Sediments
Danish Journal of Geography 95, 19–27, 1995. Organic matter and nutrient concentrations in sediments are studied in three areas representing a depth profile from shallow to deep water in the transition zone between the Kattegat and the Baltic proper. Considerable differences between the three areas exist in surface water concentrations of nutrients reflecting increasing distance from terrestrial sources of nutrients, hi spite of this, there are g…

Sea-level changes, coastal dune building and sand drift, North-Western Jutland, Denmark
Christiansen, C. & Bowman, D.: Sea-level changes, coastal dune building and sand drift, North-Western Jutland, Denmark. Geografisk Tidsskrift 86: 28–31. Copenhagen, June 1986. Two main models linking dune building and sea level changes have so far been proposed. Application of the low sea level model suggests that the major Danish dune building period from 1550 to 1750 need not necessarily be the result of human activity. The dune building period…
