  • Total sediment budget of a transgressive barrier-spit, Skallingen, SW Denmark

Christian Christiansen, Christian Fynbo Christiansen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2004

Average sea-level rise in the northern part of the Danish Wadden Sea has been 1.3 mm a−1 during the last 100 years but during the last 25 years a rise of 4.2 mm a−1 was observed. Concurrent with the recent sea-level rise the Skallingen barrier spit has migrated landward by 3–5 m a−1. Long term sediment budgets for each of the morphological units involved in the migration are reviewed (e.g. onshore in the shore face +90.000 m3 a−1, longshore -641.…

  • Longshore sediment transport and coastal erosion at Skallingen, Denmark

Troels Aagaard, Jørgen Nielsen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2004•References: 5

Within the past thirty years, the subaerial sand budget of the barrier spit Skallingen has changed from positive to negative and the foredunes are presently receding by 3–4 m/year. Volumetric losses on the barrier during the past 30 years have been computed and compared to theoretically estimated longshore sediment transport rates. It is highly likely that the sand lost from the barrier is being transported southward into the tidal inlet of Grådy…

  • Swash Bar Morphodynamics in the Danish Wadden Sea

Brad Greenwood, Brian Greenwood et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The landward migration of an intertidal swash bar at Skallingen (Danish Wadden Sea), together with the associated hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport, were monitored over several spring tidal cycles during an accretionary phase of the foreshore cycle. The landward migration was not a simple linear displacement of the bar form; instead, regular intra-tidal sand bed oscillations (average height ∼ 0.12 m; average spacing ∼ 24 m; average s…

  • Wadden Sea research

Christian Christiansen, Christian Fynbo Christiansen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2004•References: 6

This thematic issue of the Danish Journal of Geography contains 9 research papers originating from a number of recent research projects carried out in the Danish part of the European Wadden Sea. The aim of the issue is to present the current state of knowledge on Danish Wadden Sea dynamics and morphology. This editorial places the individual papers in the broader context of natural variability and anthropogenic impact on the Wadden Sea environmen…

  • Coastal Morphodynamics at Skallingen, SW Denmark

Troels Aagaard, Jørgen Nielsen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•1998•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 1998: 20–30. The present paper discusses some preliminary results from a field experiment on sediment transport and morphological change on a beach subjected to storm surge activity. The data were collected at the barrier spit of Skallingen during October/November 1996. This period was characterized by a succession of storms which resulted in high water and wave energy levels, culminating in a st…

  • Coastal Morphodynamics at Skallingen, SW Denmark

Troels Aagaard, Jørgen Nielsen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•1995•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Danish Journal of Geography 95: 1–11, 1995. This paper describes some preliminary results from a field experiment on suspended sediment transport and cross-shore profile evolution in an environment subjected to storm surges. The experiment was conducted during the fall of 1994 at the barrier beach of Skallingen, SW Denmark. Data were collected over several tidal cycles comprising low through moderately-high offshore energy conditions. During the …

  • Rhythmic beach and nearshore topography

    Troels Aagaard•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•1988•References: 15

Aagaard, Troels: Rhythmic beach and nearshore topography: examples from Denmark. Geografisk Tidsskrift 88:55–60. Copenhagen. 1988. Aerial photographs of nearshore bar features in Denmark have been studied and rhythmic wavelengths have been determined from a number of locations. From a knowledge of the profile characteristics, hypothetical standing edge wave periods, corresponding to the rhythmic length scales of the bars were calculated. It was f…

  • Observations of beach cusps

    Troels Aagaard•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Aagaard. Troels: Observations of beach cusps. Geografisk Tidsskrift 85: 27–31 Copenhagen, October 1985. Observations of beach cusps have been conducted under low-energy conditions on the northern coast of Zealand, Denmark. The distance between cusps showed consistently good correlation with values calculated from a hypothetical occurrence of synchronous or subharmonic edge waves. A relationship is implied between the edge wave frequency and the v…
