Chronology and late-Holocene evolution of Caleta de los Loros, NE Patagonia, Argentina
Geomorphological and sedimentary records of Holocene coastal deposits may serve as archives for the local reconstruction of trends in coastal evolution and of the key forcing parameters controlling long-term change. We here present new observations on the sedimentology, chronology, and surface properties of a coupled beach ridge and coastal lagoon system located on the northern shore of San Matías Gulf, NE Patagonia, Argentina. The study is based…
Coastal landforms and the Holocene evolution of the Island of Samsø, Denmark
The geomorphology of a coastal landscape may reveal an indication of past shoreline configurations. The spatial arrangement of the preserved morphologies may further contain indications on the importance of the different key parameters influencing shoreline evolution over millennial timescales, such as palaeo sea-level position, longshore currents, energy gradients, and sediment supply. This paper presents the results and observations of a survey…
Changes in Holocene relative sea-level and coastal morphology
Changes in relative sea-level (RSL) during the Holocene are reconstructed based on ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data collected across a raised beach ridge system on the island of Samsø, Denmark. The internal architecture of the beach ridge and swale deposits is divided into characteristic radar facies. We identify downlap points interpreted to mark the transition from the beachface to the upper shoreface and, thus, sea-level at the time of depo…
On luminescence bleaching of tidal channel sediments
We investigate the processes responsible for bleaching of the quartz OSL signal from tidal channel sediment. Tidal dynamics are expected to play an important role for complete bleaching of tidal sediments. However, no studies have examined the amount of reworking occurring in tidal channels and on tidal flats due to the mixing caused by currents and waves. We apply bed level data to evaluate the amount of vertical sediment reworking in modern tid…
Luminescence dating of Holocene sedimentary deposits on Rømø, a barrier island in the Wadden Sea, Denmark
This study presents an Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) based chronology for the evolution of the barrier island Rømø and related back-barrier lagoon deposits in the Danish Wadden Sea. The chronology is constructed using 78 quartz OSL ages obtained using a Single Aliquot Regenerative dose (SAR) protocol; samples were retrieved from seven sediment cores, each up to 25 m long, taken from locations on the island and within the back-barrier la…
Tidal and meteorological induced nutrient (N, P) dynamics in the micro-tidal Ho Bugt, Danish Wadden Sea
Tidal and meteorological induced variations in nutrient dynamics are important at all depth intervals in the Ho Bugt estuary. In the tidal channels, nitrate concentrations may vary ±20% and total nitrogen concentrations even more due to sedimentation/resuspension effects during the tidal cycle. On tidal flats, nutrient and carbon contents of the deposited material depend strongly on meteorological conditions and may vary 0.7% TC, 0.1% TN and 0.4%…
A Fine-grained Sediment Budget for a small Tidal Area, Königshafen, Sylt, Germany
Danish Journal of Geography 96: 1–10, 1996. A net budget for fine-grained sediment (<63 μm) has been computed for the Königshafen tidal area; a small tidal bay covering an area of some 4 km2, located in the Wadden Sea at the north-eastern end of Sylt. The net budget for fine-grained sediment has been separated into the following sediment sources: (1) Supply from the North Sea, (2) Salt marsh erosion, (3) biological primary production and (4) atmo…

Tidal Variation in Field Settling Velocities of Suspended Sediment in a Tidal Channel
Edelvang, Karen; Larsen, Michael; Pejrup, Morten: Tidal Variation in Field Settling Velocities of Suspended Sediment in a Tidal Channel. Geografisk Tidsskrift 92:116–121. Copenhagen 1992. Particles of silt and clay may form large, low density floes when suspended in salt water. The sediment floes have settling velocities much higher than the single small particles constituting them and therefore, the flocculation process may strongly influence th…
Sediment tansport in the drainage area of Ribe Å
Bartholdy, Jesper, Bent Hasholt & Morten Pejrup: Sediment transport in the drainage area of Ribe Å. Geografisk Tidsskrift 91: 1–10. Copenhagen 1991. The river Ribe Å has a drainage area of 950 km2 and a mean annual run-off of 15.6 l/s/km2. Supply and deposition of sediment in the drainage area were investigated during the period 1984–86. The denudation based on the measured supply of bed load and suspended bed load is very unevenly distributed in…

Bottom sediments in Ho Bugt—a wadden sea environment
Pejrup, Morten: Bottom sediments in Ho Bugt—a wadden sea environment. Geografisk Tidsskrift 81: 11–16, Copenhagen, June 1981. Twenty eight samples of bottom sediment from Ho Bugt, located at the west coast of Jutland, have been anlysed, and the variations within the fine and the coarse fractions described in detail. A method for classifying estuarine- and wadden-sea sediments is presented. The classification together with special characteristics …

The Turbidity Maximum in the Northern Part of Ho Bugt
Pejrup, Morten: The Turbidity Maximum in the Northern Part of Ho Bugt. Geografisk Tidsskrift 80: 72–77, Copenhagen, June 1980. Ho Bugt contains in its northernmost part a turbidity maximum. Its extension, textural composition, and concentration levels have been investigated and the share of fluvial-suspended material estimated. Finally, the different concentration processes are discussed, and it is suggested which of them are the most active in t…
