  • Rediscovery of marks established by Johan Bernhard Rekstad around the turn of the 20th century to measure frontal variations of outlet glaciers from Jostedalsbreen Ice Cap in western Norway

    Open Access•Jostein Aasen, Marthe Gjerde et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2026•References: 4

Around the turn of the 20th century, the first state geologist at the Geological Survey of Norway, located in Kristiania (Oslo) at that time, Johan (also sometimes named John) Bernhard Rekstad established a series of marks, mostly crosses carved into boulders and bedrock slabs. These marks formed the basis for frontal measurements of outlet glaciers from Jostedalsbreen Ice Cap in western Norway. In total, he carved 29 marks in front of 15 outlet …

  • Glacier thinning, recession and advance, and the associated evolution of a glacial lake between 1966 and 2021 at Austerdalsbreen , western Norway

Open Access•Gernot Seier, Jakob Abermann et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2024

The Jostedalsbreen is the largest ice cap in Norway and mainland Europe. Rapid retreat of many of its outlet glaciers since the 2000s has led to the formation of several glacial lakes. Processes causing the formation and expansion of glacial lakes and their interaction with a glacier and terminal moraine have not been widely addressed yet. In this study, we investigate the degradation of the front of the southeast‐facing outlet glacier Austerdals…

  • Repeated survey along the foreland of a receding Norwegian glacier reveals shifts in succession of beetles and spiders

    Open Access•Christian Klopsch, Jacob C Yde et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•References: 5

Glacier forelands provide important sites to study climate-forced ecological succession because a chronosequence is apparent along a single valley. However, most studies of invertebrate succession in forelands provide a single snapshot of community assemblage patterns. With glaciers retreating rapidly worldwide, it is important to begin re-surveying community composition and assessing changes in relation to new terrain revealed by the retreating …

  • Arctic climate shifts drive rapid ecosystem responses across the West Greenland landscape

    Open Access•Jasmine E Saros, N John Anderson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

Prediction of high latitude response to climate change is hampered by poor understanding of the role of nonlinear changes in ecosystem forcing and response. While the effects of nonlinear climate change are often delayed or dampened by internal ecosystem dynamics, recent warming events in the Arctic have driven rapid environmental response, raising questions of how terrestrial and freshwater systems in this region may shift in response to abrupt …

  • Statistical EOF analysis of spatiotemporal glacier mass-balance variability

    Sebastian H Mernild, Andrew P Beckerman et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2018•References: 41

An Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) variance analysis was performed to map in detail the spatiotemporal variability in individual stake mass-balances (ba) on Mittivakkat Gletscher (MG) – in a region where at present five out of ~20.000 glaciers have mass-balance observations. The EOF analysis suggested that observed ba was summarized by two modes: EOF1 and EOF2 represented 80% (significant) and 6% (insignificant) of the explained variance, res…

  • Glacier changes in the circumpolar Arctic and sub-Arctic, mid-1980s to late-2000s/2011

    Sebastian H Mernild, Jeppe K Malmros et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2015•References: 50

A new inventory record of satellite-derived area, length, elevation range and surface slope changes from the mid-1980s to late 2000s/2011 for 317 land-terminating glaciers and ice caps (GIC) is presented. The investigated GIC are located in 12 geographic regions throughout the circumpolar Arctic and sub-Arctic. This geographic subdivision allows us to examine regional variations in recent glacier changes. The method is based on a semi-automated c…

  • Land-terminating glacier volume changes in different Circum-Arctic areas, mid-1980s to late-2000s/2011

  • Recent marginal changes of the Mittivakkat Glacier, Southeast Greenland and the discovery of remains of reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus ), polar bear ( Ursus maritimus ) and peaty material

    N Tvis Knudsen, Per Nørnberg et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 12

Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(1):137–142, 2008 During field observations in August 2005 antler remains of a reindeer were found at a recently deglaciated site at about 500 m asl., and bones from a polar bear were found at about 300 m asl. along the margin of Mittivakkat Glacier, Southeast Greenland. Radio carbon dating determined the age of the samples to 720 14C years and 350 14C years, respectively. In August 2006 old s…

  • Suspended sediment transport in glacial meltwater during the initial quiescent phase after a major surge event at Kuannersuit Glacier, Greenland

    Niels Tvis Knudsen, Jacob C Yde et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 16

This paper describes a rough estimate of the suspended sediment transport in the bulk meltwater evacuated from Kuannersuit Glacier during the summers of 2000 and 2001. In 1995–98, an 11 km terrestrial surge of Kuannersuit Glacier, an outlet glacier of the largest ice cap on Disko Island, West Greenland, affected the catchment dramatically. The results show that in 2000, the daily sediment discharge was about 32,500 t day−1, corresponding to a spe…
