The Danish nitrogen footprint
Anthropogenic production of reactive nitrogen (N r ) amplifies the negative impact of excess N r on the environment, causing harm to both ecosystems and human health. N-footprint tools offer a valuable method for predicting N r emissions, helping to identify leakage points across the entire production chain, from farm to plate. This study estimates the N-footprint of an average Danish individual based on population-based consumption patterns. The…
Navigating the nexus
The effects of climate change are instigating a discourse shift towards net-zero emissions agriculture. However, a sectoral silo paradigm of policy design is incompatible with a systems approach to address complex global environmental challenges. This study introduces a social cartography approach that amalgamates network theory with a nexus perspective to identify social relation changes in the making. The study examines the role of an advisor-l…

Policies for wetlands implementation in Denmark and Sweden – historical lessons and emerging issues
A framework for nitrogen futures in the shared socioeconomic pathways
Humanity's transformation of the nitrogen cycle has major consequences for ecosystems, climate and human health, making it one of the key environmental issues of our time. Understanding how trends could evolve over the course of the 21 st century is crucial for scientists and decision-makers from local to global scales. Scenario analysis is the primary tool for doing so, and has been applied across all major environmental issues, including nitrog…
Environmental analysis of producing biochar and energy recovery from pulp and paper mill biosludge
Sweden is one of the largest exporters of pulp and paper products in the world. It follows that huge quantities of sludge rich in carbonaceous organic material and containing heavy metals are generated. This paper carried out a comparative environmental analysis of three different technologies, which can be adopted to produce biochar and recover energy from the biosludge, using landfilling as the reference case. These three thermochemical bioslud…
Site‐specific modulators control how geophysical and socio‐technical drivers shape land use and land cover
Human utilisation of natural resources is the most important direct driver of land cover patterns in the Anthropocene. Here, we present a conceptual framework for how the effects of geophysical drivers (e.g., topography, soil, climate, and hydrology) and socio‐technical drivers (e.g., technology, legal regulation, economy, and culture) on land use and land cover are shaped by site‐specific modulators such as local topography and social and cultur…
Possibilities for near-term bioenergy production and GHG-mitigation through sustainable intensification of agriculture and forestry in Denmark
To mitigate climate change it is necessary to further increase the deployment of renewable energy, including bioenergy. This analysis shows how this can be achieved in Danish agriculture and forestry before 2020. The key is a sustainable intensification and we show through three scenarios how it is possible to increase production while at the same time decreasing environmental impact and with only minor consequences on food and feed production. A…
Where to implement local biotech innovations? A framework for multi-scale socio-economic and environmental impact assessment of Green Bio-Refineries
Nitrogen footprints
Nitrogen (N) management presents a sustainability dilemma: N is strongly linked to energy and food production, but excess reactive N causes environmental pollution. The N footprint is an indicator that quantifies reactive N losses to the environment from consumption and production of food and the use of energy. The average per capita N footprint (calculated using the N-Calculator methodology) of ten countries varies from 15 to 47 kg N capita−1 ye…

A nitrogen budget for Denmark; developments between 1990 and 2010, and prospects for the future
A nitrogen (N) budget for Denmark has been developed for the years 1990 to 2010, describing the inputs and outputs at the national scale and the internal flows between relevant sectors of the economy. Satisfactorily closing the N budgets for some sectors of the economy was not possible, due to missing or contradictory information. The budgets were nevertheless considered sufficiently reliable to quantify the major flows. Agriculture was responsib…
Policies for agricultural nitrogen management—trends, challenges and prospects for improved efficiency in Denmark
With more than 60% of the land farmed, with vulnerable freshwater and marine environments, and with one of the most intensive, export-oriented livestock sectors in the world, the nitrogen (N) pollution pressure from Danish agriculture is severe. Consequently, a series of policy action plans have been implemented since the mid 1980s with significant effects on the surplus, efficiency and environmental loadings of N. This paper reviews the policies…
Effects of policy measures implemented in Denmark on nitrogen pollution of the aquatic environment
Methodological issues of modelling farm and landscape scale indicators for sustainable land systems
Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 106(2): 35–43, 2006 This paper presents results from the strategic EU research project MEA-scope (www.MEA-scope.org), which aims at the development of a GIS-based framework to model farm and landscape scale indicators for rural sustainability. Problems in scaling information between the farm- and the landscape levels in particular are addressed. Both disaggregation and aggregation techniques are …
