Economic structuring of land as a blank space – the development of cadastral cartography in Denmark
Cadastral maps constitute the geographical basis of resource administration in most developed countries, including those in Scandinavia, where they function as a framework for organizing the economic utility of land and associated decision-making processes. The authors investigate the history of Danish cadastral cartography with a focus on its representation of landscape. They explore representations of landscape in maps of a study area in Denmar…
Military land use and the impact on landscape
The potential of a digital, transdisciplinary approach to landscape change and urbanization around Copenhagen in the 20th century
Urbanization has long been recognized as a major driver for landscape change in the vicinity of major cities and urban systems. Studies of the historical process of urbanization often rely on spatial data or statistics and rarely include detailed historical socio-economic data. This research note aims to emphasize the potential of using digitized cultural heritage data in landscape research. The focus is on how a digital transdisciplinary approac…

Landscape Ecology
Landscape ecology is an interdisciplinary field of research and practice that deals with the mutual association between the spatial configuration and ecological functioning of landscapes, exploring and describing processes involved in the differentiation of spaces within landscapes, and the ecological significance of the patterns which are generated by such processes. In landscape ecology, perspectives drawn from existing academic disciplines are…
Mapping the Nation for War
The focus in this article is on the way the post eighteenth-century cartographic turn in military practices developed into a particular military perception of landscape that continues to set the standard of Danish topographical mapping. My argument is that the development of modern topographical maps is the result of a long process of military comprehension and measurement of the terrain in order to conduct field operations. The demand for spatia…

Decrease in Danish semi-natural grassland – a social construct or a real-world change
During the past century, the western hemisphere has seen a general trend of agricultural expansion on the behalf of semi-natural habitat types, such as heathlands and meadows. This has been documented in numerous studies of land use change. This trend is reflected in today’s European rural landscapes, which are dominated by intensive agriculture. However, many of these studies are based on cartographical sources, such as topographical and themati…
New multifunctional hunting landscapes in Denmark
Between 1992 and 2008 subsidization of mandatory set aside land under the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) gave rise to the establishment of a characteristic type of multifunctional hunting landscapes in Denmark, primarily located on fallow land in tilled valley bottoms. A national survey of these landscapes in 2006 has been carried out and 1061 hunting areas have been identified nationwide. Subsidies relating to set aside land acted as a supp…
