  • Social–ecological transformations towards sustainability in drylands: A conceptual framework with examples from the Karamoja cluster in East Africa

    Open Access•Aida Bargués-Tobella, Per Knutsson et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2026

Drylands face urgent development challenges that are complex and interconnected, requiring holistic systems-based approaches. Here, we present a social–ecological systems framework to guide research, policy, and action across disciplines and sectors towards sustainability transformations in drylands for improved livelihoods and enhanced ecosystem, livestock, and human health. Our conceptual framework integrates three non-exclusive and complementa…

  • Agroforestry's contribution to livelihoods and carbon sequestration in East Africa: A systematic review

  • SDG synergy between agriculture and forestry in the food, energy, water and income nexus: Reinventing agroforestry

  • Scenario Development as a Basis for Formulating a Research Program on Future Agriculture: A Methodological Approach

Open Access•Ingrid Öborn, Jan Bengtsson et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 17

To increase the awareness of society to the challenges of global food security, we developed five contrasting global and European scenarios for 2050 and used these to identify important issues for future agricultural research. Using a scenario development method known as morphological analysis, scenarios were constructed that took economic, political, technical, and environmental factors into account. With the scenarios as a starting point future…

  • A Systems Approach to Assess Farm-scale Nutrient and Trace Element Dynamics: A Case Study at the Ojebyn Dairy Farm

    Ingrid Öborn, Anna-Karin Modin-Edman et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2005

A systems analysis approach was used to assess farm-scale nutrient and trace element sustainability by combining full-scale field experiments with specific studies of nutrient release from mineral weathering and trace-element cycling. At the Öjebyn dairy farm in northern Sweden, a farm-scale case study including phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and zinc (Zn) was run to compare organic and conventional agricultural management practices. By combining…

  • Cadmium in Food Production Systems: A Health Risk for Sensitive Population Groups

    Ing‐Marie Olsson, Ing-Marie Olsson et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2005

This paper gives an overview of the cadmium (Cd) situation in agricultural systems and human exposure in Sweden. Cadmium levels in agricultural soils (the plow layer) increase by 0.03% to 0.05% per year. Feed can give substantial contributions of Cd to local agricultural systems. Effects on human kidney function are indicated by some measurements already at today's exposure levels. If food products reach the maximum permissible levels given by th…

  • Sustainable Development of Food Production: A Case Study on Scenarios for Pig Production

Susanne Stern, Ulf Sonesson et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2005•References: 11

To study future, sustainable production systems, a step-wise method was used to create three future scenarios for pig production based on different sustainability goals. The first scenario focused on animal welfare and the natural behavior of the animals. The second targeted low impacts on the environment and the efficient use of natural resources. The third scenario aimed at product quality and safety. Each scenario fulfilled different aspects o…

  • Appraisal of World Reference Base for Soil Resources—from a nordic point of view

    Mogens Humlekrog Greve, Markku Yli-Halla et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2000•References: 9

During the project “Nordic Reference Soils” 13 different soils from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden were selected in order to represent i) soils covering the main areas of the Nordic area, ii) soils from the different climatic regions, and iii) environmental sensitive soils. The 13 Nordic Reference Soils provided an excellent basis for the evaluation of the WRB (World Reference Base for Soil Resources) performance under Nordic conditions. Cla…
