  • Early Maglemosian culture in the Preboreal landscape

    Open Access•Catherine Jessen, Catherine A Jessen et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2014•Cited by: 13•References: 3

The transition from Late Palaeolithic to early Mesolithic cultures is strongly associated with the major environmental and climatic changes occurring with the shift from the Younger Dryas to the Holocene in northern Europe. In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary study combining archaeological and palaeoenvironmental research in an attempt to examine the relationship between environment and culture during this transition. Lundby Mose is a …

  • Dynamic early Holocene vegetation development on the Faroe Islands inferred from high-resolution plant macrofossil and pollen data

    Open Access•Gina E Hannon, Mats Rundgren et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

Vegetation dynamics during the earliest part of the Holocene (11,250"10,250"cal yr BP) have been reconstructed from a lacustrine sequence on Sandoy, the Faroe Islands, using detailed plant macrofossil and pollen evidence. The plant macrofossils suggest the initial vegetation was sparse herb and shrub tundra, with Salix herbacea and open-ground species, followed by the development of a denser and more species-rich arctic heathland after 11,150"cal…

  • Variability and seasonality of North Atlantic climate during the early Holocene

    Open Access•Catherine Jessen, Catherine A Jessen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Based on their position in relation to major ocean currents, palaeoclimatic archives in the Faroe Islands are expected to be sensitive recorders of variations in North Atlantic circulation. The multiproxy analysis (magnetic susceptibility, total carbon, nitrogen and sulphur, biogenic silica, grains >255 μm) of a lacustrine record with both winter and summer climate indicators illustrates the variability of Faroese climate during the early Holocen…

  • A late Holocene palaeoenvironmental record from Altona Bay, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands

    Catherine Jessen, Catherine A Jessen et al.•ARTICLE•Geografisk Tidsskrift-Danish…•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 36

Geografisk Tidsskrift, Danish Journal of Geography 108(2):59–70, 2008 A reconstruction of the palaeoenvironmental development of Altona Bay, St. Croix, northeastern Caribbean, has been made based on the sedimentological, geochemical and pollen analyses of a 1.83 m long vibracore. For chronological control, AMS 14C measurements were made at 5 levels downcore. The sedimentary sequence covers the last c. 4,700 years, containing both (mangrove) peat …
