  • Gender, Migration, and Magical Naturalism in Edgar Reitz's Die Andere Heimat (2013)

    Open Access•Rachel Palfreyman•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2019

A gendered understanding of the concept of Heimat exposes difficulties with gender representation in Heimat film and writing in both the traditional and critical modes. Women can be so closely aligned with the construction or even embodiment of the Heimat that their own access to it is in doubt. Reitz's Heimat (1984) was criticised as well as celebrated for its representation of the maternal Heimat constructed by Maria seemingly for the benefit o…

  • Life and Death in the Shadows: Lotte Reiniger's Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Ahmed

    Open Access•Rachel Palfreyman•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2011

This article examines the reception of the pioneering German animator Lotte Reiniger (1899–1981) with particular reference to her feature film Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed (1926). I discuss the tendency to praise Reiniger and her work, rather than analyse it in depth, and argue that such neglect is in part due to the difficulty of contextualising Reiniger combined with her technical virtuosity which sees her relegated to ‘craft’ rather than a…

  • Heimat A German Dream: Regional Loyalties and National Identity in German Culture 1890–1990

    Elizabeth Boa, Rachel Palfreyman•BOOK•Heimat, a German dream•2000

The discourse of Heimat, meaning homeland or roots, has been a medium of debate on German identity between region and nation for at least a century. Four phases parallel Germany's discontinuous history: Heimat literature as a response to modernization and to regional tensions before the First World War; the inter-war period when Heimat divided into racist ideology, left-wing opposition, and inner resistance to the Third Reich; a post-war dialecti…

  • Reflections of the ‘Heimat’ Genre: Intertextual Reference in Reitz's HBMT

    Open Access•Rachel Palfreyman•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•1997

This article examines two intertexts of Edgar Reitz's Heimat La Habanera (Detlev Sierck 1937) and Heimat (Carl Froelich 1938). Both films set ‘Heimat’ against the Other: La Habanera is a study of a woman who is irresistibly attracted to the exotic, only to be disappointed by its dark side. Heimat is less obviously National Socialist propaganda, but concerns a woman who returns from an alluring foreign place to the ‘Heimat’ and is recuperated into…
