  • World War Ii ‘Von Unten’

    Open Access•Debbie Pinfold•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2016•References: 1

Literary presentations of children in war tend to depict them exclusively as innocent victims. Indeed, even those texts featuring children who have been subjected to, and have ostensibly absorbed, Nazi indoctrination continue to insist on a Romantic myth of childhood as the embodiment of a prelapsarian past and redemptive potential for the future. This essay, however, focuses on the way the exiled author Lisa Tetzner (1894–1963) uses images of ch…

  • The End of the Fairy Tale? Christian Petzold's Barbara and the Difficulties of Interpretation

    Open Access•Debbie Pinfold•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2014

When Christian Petzold's Barbara appeared in 2012 it was received as a new departure in both Petzold's work and in representations of the former GDR. The film was understood first and foremost as a love story, and this, together with the provincial setting and bright colour palette, lent an unaccustomed warmth to the image of the GDR. This article presents a close reading of the film to demonstrate that Petzold's plot deconstructs the victim / pe…

  • Das Mündel will Vormund sein’

    Open Access•Debbie Pinfold•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2011•References: 4

At the time of the ‘Wende’, the dominant image of the SED state in political and cultural discourse was that of ‘Vater Staat’, the authoritarian state which had kept its population in an unduly protracted form of ‘Unmündigkeit’ or childhood. As the GDR recedes further into the past, this perception of the relationship between state and population has been maintained and indeed reinforced by the media's continued emphasis on images of the peaceful…

  • Erinnerung ideologisch entschlacken’ or Lost in Translation

    Open Access•Debbie Pinfold•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2007

Jana Hensel's stated intention in her best‐selling Zonenkinder (2002) was ‘Erinnerung ideologisch zu entschlacken’, to present the former GDR not as a political system but as the ‘Herkunftsraum’ of her childhood experience. The text is rich in historical and cultural allusions, but these are often presented from the perspective of the experiencing child who either does not fully understand them or takes them for granted. This presents a serious c…

  • Das War Schon Einmal Da, Wie Langweilig!’

    Open Access•Debbie Pinfold•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•1999

Gert Hofmann has received surprisingly little critical attention, given the generally favourable reviews his work has received in the German feuilletons. His substantial radio output (more than forty ‘Hörspiele’, three of which earned him major prizes) is the least researched area of his work. This is partly due to problems of availability; few of the plays were published in book form. But his later plays appear to have been neglected mainly beca…
