  • Wer Ich Bin, Erfährst Du Nicht!’

    Open Access•Seán Allan•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2026

The figure of Don Juan/Don Giovanni provided directors working across a range of media in the GDR with an opportunity to appropriate canonical literary models and shape them in accordance with the needs of the fledgling socialist state. The Berliner Ensemble's 1952/54 adaptation of Molière's Dom Juan and Walter Felsenstein's 1966 production of Mozart's Il dissoluto punito, ossia il Don Giovanni for the Komische Oper reflect two diametrically oppo…

In Ehe im Schatten and Roman einer jungen Ehe Kurt Maetzig analyses the role of the artist and the changing conceptualisation of aesthetics at two contrasting moments of political crisis. Set during the Third Reich, Ehe im Schatten criticises any attempt to separate art and politics, and exposes the limitations of bourgeois classical drama as a form of political resistance. But despite its radical subject‐matter, the film's melodramatic format hi…

  • Revolutionary Aesthetics? Kleist, 1968, and the New German Cinema

    Open Access•Seán Allan•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2011•References: 2

This essay analyses the particular appeal of Kleist's work for the filmmakers of the New German Cinema movement in the Federal Republic during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Both Volker Schlöndorff's Kohlhaas – der Rebell (1968) and Hans‐Jürgen Syberberg's San Domingo (1970) invite the spectator to view the student movement and the political events of 1968 through the prism of Kleist's Michael Kohlhaas and Die Verlobung in St. Domingo . Although…

Jean Wilson, Seán Allan•ARTICLE•German Studies Review•2003

The literary oeuvre of the controversial writer of dramas and novellas Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) continues to fascinate scholars of German literature even today, nearly two centuries after his death by suicide. Over the years, disagreements among Kleist scholars have been so extreme that some have suggested that his work subverts the very process of interpretation. Sean Allan challenges this view and the related one of Kleist as a profound …
