  • Modeling the art historical canon

    Open Access•Laura M F Bertens•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Although the art historical canon has been the subject of fierce debate, it remains an essential construct, shaping textbooks and survey courses. Visual representations of the canon often illustrate these narratives. Students encounter diagrams in their studies and it is important to make them aware of the illusion of scientific objectivity. This paper proposes the use of the computer ontology, as a modeling tool with which students can make tran…

  • Succeeding by Failing

    Open Access•Laura M F Bertens•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2021

The Berlin street Bernauer Straße has played an important role in the history of the Berlin Wall, from its initial construction to its demolition. Nowadays it contains the longest remaining stretch of the border zone and an elaborate memorial has been constructed on the site. The memorial is a complex space: it seamlessly blends in with its surroundings, uses a range of media and serves multiple purposes at once. It is this apparent failure to re…

  • Doing’ memory

    Open Access•Laura M F Bertens•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Remembrance of the Holocaust is fraught with difficulty and as survivors pass away, our understanding moves from communicative to cultural memory. In exploring ways to successfully engage audiences, artists take up the notion of the monument and extend its boundaries. An example is Cardiff and Bures Miller’s Alter Bahnhof video walk (2012), which invites its participants to critically consider the notion of monumentalisation, the nature of photog…

  • Okay ladies, now let’s get in formation!”

    Open Access•Laura M F Bertens•ARTICLE•Open Cultural Studies•2017

This paper explores strategies for constructing and perpetuating cultural memory through music videos, using Beyonce’s Formation (2016) and Janelle Monae’s Many Moons (2008) and Q.U.E.E.N. (2013) as case studies. The medium’s idiosyncrasies create unique ways of communicating and remembering, explored here within a framework of Cultural Studies and Memory Studies. Easy dissemination and the limited length of most videos ensure a large, diverse au…

  • Playing and Dying Between the Real and the Hyperreal

    Open Access•Laura M F Bertens•ARTICLE•Third Text•2016•Cited by: 1

At dOCUMENTA 13 The Pixelated Revolution by Rabih Mroué (2012) and the Alter Bahnhof Video Walk by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller (2012) were shown, both of which explore processes and risks of mediation through video cameras. Mroué’s work provides an analysis of amateur videos of the Syrian war in which the camera operator films a sharpshooter and continues filming until the sharpshooter shoots; what motivates the camera operator to keep …
