Portraying Animals in Disasters: News Media Representations of the Portuguese Wildfires of 2017
This article explores how news media report the situation of animals in disasters, focusing on a specific case study: the tragic wildfires that hit Portugal in 2017. Drawing on thematic content analysis of newspapers and primetime television news, we examined, through multivariate Multiple Component Analysis, followed by Cluster analysis, whether the resulting thematic macro-categories clustered around narrative topoi. We propose four portrays of…
Warming the house: "Children and animals "doing family
In this article, we explore the common worlds of children and companion animals, and ask how animals are contributing to the making of contemporary families, and of childhood therein. Departing from D. H. Morgan's conceptualisation of family practices, we explore the possibility of extending this concept to children-animals relationships and ask whether it is possible to talk about children-animal practices. We draw on empirical data from 48 inte…
Daphne the Cat: Reimagining human-animal boundaries on Facebook
How are companion animals, and cats in particular, built as Otherness, on social media? And how are human-animal boundaries reconfigured along the flow of online digital interactions? This article tries to answer these questions drawing on the story of female cat Daphne, as reported on the official Facebook page of a Portuguese animal shelter. Based on both narrative analysis and categorical content analysis of the posts and comments around the s…
Friendship and care: Gendered practices within personal communities in Portugal
What is the role of friends in practices of care within intimate relationships, either towards each other, or in supporting caring practices towards other persons (children, parents or other kin)? And to what extent are these caring practices gendered? I explore how friendship either disrupts, or reproduces, the ethics of care that cross-cuts gender relations throughout society. I focus on the experience of Portuguese men and women and take as re…
The personal life of Facebook: Managing friendships with social media
How are social media used to manage personal and intimate relations, in particular, friendships? Can these interactions be better understood through the dynamics of personal life? This article aims to answer these questions through the lens of personal life, together with concepts such as relationality, memory, biography and imaginary. Drawing on qualitative data from 30 in-depth interviews, in which Portuguese men and women were invited to descr…

A vida sexual sob prova: Impactos Da Vida Profissional Na Construção Da Experiência Sexual
Friendship, Gender and Sexual Experience: Retrospective Narratives about the Formation of a Sexual Self during Youth
In this article, I explore the ways in which friendship contributes to shaping the boundaries of men's and women's sexual experiences. Using inputs from the sociology of experience and the sociology of friendship, I explore qualitative data from a research about sexuality in Portugal, in which I collected sexual biographies of 35 men and women, aged 30-55. In the in-depth interviews, these adult participants, possessing secondary and tertiary edu…
The Real Deal”: Managing Intimacy Within Friendship at a Distance
How is intimacy constructed between friends who live apart, at a long distance? Family studies have paid considerable attention to the (re)negotiation processes of personal and intimate bonds within transnational families. However, less attention has been paid to the ways in which these structural constraints affect intimate relationships between friends. As significant members of the personal networks of individuals, friends have a supportive ro…
What Is a Friend? An Exploratory Typology of the Meanings of Friendship
In this article I explore the contemporary normative meanings of friendship, unpacking the subject through two different questions: "what is a good friend?" and "what is an intimate friend?" Drawing on survey data from a national representative sample (n = 1142), the topic is explored in the context of a southern European country (Portugal) that represents an interesting case study, for its characteristics of late, though abrupt, entrance into la…
