Continuous and Progressive Disintegration”: Forms of Precarity in Literature and Film
Fassbinder’s Jews: Screening Jewish/German History in Berlin Alexanderplatz
This essay considers representations of German-Jewish culture in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s adaptation of Berlin Alexanderplatz. After reconstructing the historical and political context in which Fassbinder adapted the film, the essay analyzes key scenes from the film containing Jewish figures: Franz Biberkopf’s conversations with the Ostjuden Nahum and Eliser; scenes juxtaposing biblical discussions of ritual sacrifice with the sights and sounds…

The role of volunteering in supporting well‐being – What might this mean for social prescribing? A best‐fit framework synthesis of qualitative research
Volunteering for an organisation, charity or group enables people to make connections with others and to be involved in interesting, worthwhile and/or enjoyable pursuits. Engaging in volunteering can form part of a social prescribing action plan developed between a patient and link worker. Greater understanding of the processes through which volunteering can improve people's well-being as part of social prescribing will help to support link worke…
We Can Come Very Close to Them: Solidarity and the Struggle for Liberation inThe Aesthetics of Resistance
This essay explores how Peter Weiss's anticolonial, anti-imperialist analysis, developed in the 1960s in response to the advent of decolonization and the emergence of neocolonialism, is woven into Die Ästhetik des Widerstands' story of political self-education. Two central features of this analysis were Weiss's concern with how solidarity can be forged between groups separated by geographic distance or cultural difference, and with the difference…
Introduction: Peter Weiss and The Aesthetics of Resistance
In this introduction the editors first trace the reception of Peter Weiss's Aesthetics of Resistance in (West) Germany and the United States. Focusing on the relation between politics and aesthetics, some critics characterized this relation as fraught, arguing that the novel's supposedly outdated politics ultimately rendered it obsolete. Others approached the novel as a writing experiment articulating politics and aesthetics in tense but producti…
DIY, im Eigenverlag: East German Tamizdat LPs
Between 1983 and 1989, as the two German pop music industries continued to license one another's properties, and Amiga continued releasing American and British records, five long-playing records were released by independent labels based in Western Europe that contained music recorded in the German Democratic Republic. They were then smuggled out of the country rather than formally licensed for release abroad. Existing outside the legal framework …

Weiss/Sartre: Cold War Stellungnahme and the Poetic–Political Either/Or in Peter Weiss's Final Swedish Novel
This essay studies the emergence of the concept of Stellungnahme in the prose of Peter Weiss. The last long-form text Weiss wrote in Swedish, the unpublished 1956 novel Die Situation, represents a serious consideration of the literary theory of Jean-Paul Sartre, whose arguments about the different efficacies of prose and poetry inform much of Weiss's early thinking about the relationship between aesthetics and politics and about his own place in …
