Knossos, the Little Palace North Project, Part I
This article is the first of a series presenting the results of two seasons of excavation (2001 and 2002) at the Little Palace North site, Knossos. The excavation was aimed at the exploration of the exposed earth section directly north of the Little Palace, prior to the construction of a drystone wall which was to protect this section from further erosion. While limited in extent, the excavation provided an opportunity to increase our understandi…

Minotaur and Centaur
Towards an appreciation of Minoan metallurgical techniques
A group of ten copper and copper alloy Minoan tools from the Ashmolean Museum's Cretan collection is analysed. Though the component elements are recorded, the emphasis is on metallographic aspects of the objects. By considering these sets of information together we can learn how craftsmen treated the types of metal available in order to suit the requirements of the intended products. Many details of the stages undergone by the metal in its transf…
The neolithic levels from the Throne Room system, Knossos
Small pockets of neolithic levels were sampled during the 1987 investigation of the Throne Room System in the palace of Knossos. The limited stratigraphic evidence is here presented, as well as sections concerning the pottery, small finds, and animal bones. The most interesting point to emerge concerns the presence of Final Neolithic characteristics in the ceramic evidence that will help towards formulating an appreciation of that elusive period …
The Potters' Wheel in Minoan Crete
The large numbers and variety of forms of this object type that have gradually accumulated in the last half century permit now of an overall review, drawing in part on earlier and more individual accounts. Following the Catalogue, five broad typological classes are discussed, analysed in detail, and manufacture and method of employment deduced, as far as possible. Geographical and chronological distribution is looked at. The Pre-Palatial period s…
Unexplored Mansion, Knossos
This note is the first in an occasional series to add and expand the Unexplored Mansion report (the Other Finds section): the first part records the identification of pieces of emeryore(s) of a heavier calibre than previously recognized (LM II predominately); whilst the second draws together items of stone and clay pulled out from the Post-Minoan levels – personal ornament, vases, a ‘ritual’ hammer, a mould, and a ‘firestand’
Clay Tobacco Pipes from the University of Crete Medical Faculty
A small number of clay pipes for smoking tobacco (of the Eastern or tsimbouchi variety) were uncovered in the Knossos Medical Faculty excavations. These are first catalogued and discussed, and then compared with other published material from Greek lands within the Ottoman Empire. Because such study is still in its infancy, the conclusions are but slight: the KMF pieces, lying relatively early within the series (perhaps broadly the 18th century AD…
