  • Geophysical mapping of coastal and shallow submerged Bronze Age settlements

Open Access•Nikos T Papadopoulos, Angelos Plageras et al.•ARTICLE•ArchéoSciences•2025

Enhance the archaeological evidence; Continuation of prehistoric settlements; Coastal and shallow marine environments

  • Imaging Cultural Heritage in Very Shallow Nearshore Areas Using Seismic Refraction Tomography and Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves

    Open Access•Bilio P Markasioti, G Kritikakis et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2025•References: 12

Geophysical methods play a vital role in archaeology, particularly in the discovery and preservation of cultural heritage. Despite their extensive application in terrestrial settings, their use in very shallow marine environments has been relatively limited. This research investigates the effectiveness of multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and seismic refraction tomography (SRT) in mapping submerged and buried archaeological structures…

  • Assess the Effectiveness of Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves Method in Mapping Ancient Structures in Ultrashallow Aquatic Environments

    Open Access•G Kritikakis, Nikos Papadopoulos et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The present geophysical research aims to evaluate the applicability of multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) on mapping ultrashallow underwater ancient masonry remnants. The work presents the analysis from a single seismic line using MASW and seismic refraction tomography (SRT) methods and its corresponding electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) section surveyed at the submerged prehistoric site of Agioi Theodoroi area located 10 km east…

  • Medieval relative low sea-level indications from the Peloponnese and the Aegean Sea

Open Access•Benny Bechor, Theotokis Theodoulou et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2020

  • Aspects of ancient Greek trade re-evaluated with amphora DNA evidence

    Open Access•Brendan Foley, Brendan P Foley et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2011•Cited by: 16•References: 12

  • The 2005 Chios Ancient Shipwreck Survey

Brendan Foley, Brendan P Foley et al.•ARTICLE•Hesperia The Journal of the…•2009•Cited by: 12•References: 32

  • Searching for Ancient Shipwrecks in the Aegean Sea

Open Access•Dimitris Sakellariou, Panos Georgiou et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 11

This paper presents the results of two deep-water archaeological surveys recently conducted in the Aegean Sea, and the advantages of using conventional marine geological techniques in deep-water archaeology. Two Hellenistic wrecks were discovered: one in the Chios-Oinousses strait at 70 m, was a concentration of over 400 amphoras in a 1.5-m-high, high-backscattering, morphological high; the second, west of Kythnos island, at 495 m, consisted of a…
