  • Palaeogeography of Ancient Lasaia (SE Crete, Greece): The Evolution of a Harbour from the Minoan Palatial Period to Roman Times

    Nikos Mourtzas, Eleni Kolaiti•ARTICLE•Méditerranée•2022

The remains of the Hellenistic-Roman harbour-town of Lasaia are situated in southeastern Crete on a headland at the NE end of the bay of Kaloi Limenes, while at a short distance from the shore lies the island of Traphos. The application of a geoarchaeological method allowed us to reconstruct the palaeogeography of the coast and track the evolution of the ancient harbour of Lasaia from the Minoan palatial period to Hellenistic-Roman times to the 1…

  • Geoarchaeology of the Roman harbour of Ierapetra (SE Crete, Greece)

    Nikos Mourtzas, Eleni Kolaiti•ARTICLE•Méditerranée•2022

In this paper, we reconstruct the palaeogeographical evolution of the ancient seafront of Roman Ierapetra, using historical evidence, maps and new bathymetric data. Modern human interventions in the coastal zone have significantly altered the primary data necessary for determining past sea levels. During Roman times, when the sea level was 1.30 m lower than it is at present, major technical interventions were needed in order to form a safe harbou…
