  • The role of rhythm in learning to read in children with and without reading difficulties

Open Access•Nicolás Gutiérrez Palma, Nuria Calet et al.•ARTICLE•Learning and Instruction•2026

Background Recent research indicates that rhythm can influence the development of phonological awareness and, thus, the learning to read. Aims This work aimed to test the relationship between rhythm and reading in Spanish through an intervention study in children with and without reading difficulties. Methods We used a pre-test/post-test design and worked with a sample of 131 children in the first year of primary education (29 with reading diffic…

  • Examining the contribution of segmental, suprasegmental, and non-linguistic skills to early word reading in Spanish-speaking preschoolers

    Open Access•Alba Martínez-López, Dunia Garrido et al.•ARTICLE•Reading and Writing•2026

Suprasegmental phonology, encompassing the rhythmic elements of spoken language, plays a significant role in early reading acquisition. Despite growing evidence of its importance, the relationships among suprasegmental and segmental phonological skills, non-linguistic rhythmic abilities and early reading development remain insufficiently specified. The present study examines how these skills contribute to early word reading in Spanish-speaking pr…

  • The Role of Phonological and Rhythmic Skills in Learning to Write Words in Spanish

Open Access•Nieves Valencia Naranjo, Nuria Calet et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Reading•2026

Background Both phonological and stress awareness have been related to the development of literacy. Moreover, according to Goswami's temporal sampling theory, another prosodic factor, rhythmic synchronization skill, also favours reading acquisition. However, previous findings on the relation between prosody and literacy are sometimes inconsistent. The present study focuses on word spelling, with two main objectives. The first is to determine whet…

  • On the role of the written accent mark in visual word recognition in Spanish

Open Access•Nicolás Gutiérrez Palma, Michael G Shelton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Reading•2021

Background Previous research has shown that syllables are important units in visual word recognition in Spanish. If they are treated as real phonological units, then other related phonological features such as lexical stress (syllable prominence) may also play a role in this process. At times, lexical stress is the only difference between minimal pairs in Spanish (e.g., sábana ‘sheet’ vs sabana ‘savannah’). These words are usually distinguished b…

  • The Delayed Naming Task, Phonological Preparation Time, and the Three-syllable Stress Window in Spanish

Michael Shelton, Michael G Shelton et al.•ARTICLE•Hispania•2019

The current study presents the delayed naming task as an effective tool for testing the robustness of phonotactic constraints. A delayed naming task was employed to test for quantity sensitivity among nonwords in Spanish. Results reveal a robust effect of stress modulation by syllable weight as evidenced by differential rates of error between penultimate diphthongs and monophthongs in nonwords marked for antepenultimate stress. Items containing p…

  • Metalinguistic Intuitions and Dominant Language Transfer in Heritage Spanish Syllabification

Michael Shelton, Michael G Shelton et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage Language Journal•2017

While heritage speakers of Spanish have been shown to differ from monolingual speakers along many morphosyntactic lines, comparatively few studies in heritage linguistics have focused on phonology. To test whether the knowledge of English phonotactics would influence SpanishEnglish heritage speaker syllabification patterns in Spanish, 29 heritage and 29 monolingual speakers of Spanish completed a paper-and-pencil syllabification task in which the…

  • The Syllabification of the Spanish On-Glide

Michael Shelton, Michael G Shelton et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone…•2012

This paper reports the findings of an experiment designed to test the syllabification of on-glides in Spanish by means of a behavioral task. Traditional approaches to Spanish syllabification assume that on-glides are syllabified with the vowel in the nucleus. However, findings from the developmental literature suggest that at least during early stages of acquisition an alternative onset syllabification is possible. The results of the present stud…
