May I pick your brain? Local minds as living cadastres in a Portuguese eleventh‐century lawsuit
In the context of a dispute with the monastery of Lorvão, in the late eleventh century, the monks of Vacariça, near Coimbra (modern Portugal), carried out a field enquiry in the village of Recardães. This was part of a failed attempt to repossess a number of land plots that they claimed were theirs, but had lost control of. This case is a suitable starting point for a discussion of the fundamental, but often neglected role of Dense Local Knowledg…
The value of status
This article proposes a novel approach to a much neglected source of information: the monetary penalties in charters. Historians have long had difficulties in explaining the rationale underlying such clauses. An analysis of over 500 charters from León from the Astur-Leonese period (854–1037) unveils the relationship between the quantities and types of unit by which monetary penalties were set, the status of the parties involved and the nature of …
In the name of a distant king
This article explores the representation of royal power in the tenth‐century county of C astile by contrasting the low degrees of effective royal agency within the county with a dominant charter‐writing tradition that coupled king and count in the synchronisms of the dating clauses. The components of the C astilian charter corpus are broken down and compared to other areas in northern I beria, in order to suggest that, rather than a mere regional…
Tiempos oscuros? Territorios y Sociedad en el Centro de la Península Ibérica (siglos VII–X) – Edited by Iñaki Martín Viso
Identification of the sole extant original charter issued by Fernán González, Count of Castile (932–970)
A 937 charter now at the British Library is identified as the sole extant original issued by Fernán González, Count of Castile, and as having been written by the monk Florentius of Valeranica, the best-known scribe in tenth-century Castile. The piece's authenticity is established through detailed diplomatic and palaeographical analysis, including comparison with other works by Florentius. We would also like to thank the two anonymous JMIS readers…
The Early Middle Ages
Kings, aristocrats, peasants, and the Church are among the shared features of most early medieval societies. However, these also varied dramatically in time and space. Can petty regional kings, for instance, be compared to those in charge of a whole empire? Scale is a crucial factor in modelling, explaining, and conceptualizing the past. Furthermore, many issues that historians and archaeologists treat independently can be theorized together as p…
Scale and scale change in the early Middle Ages
The early Castilian peasantry
Notions and interpretations of the peasantry of early medieval Castile evolved significantly during the twentieth century, along the lines of major historiographical changes. After a period largely dominated by the paradigm of legal and institutional history, the incorporation of social and economic approaches in the 1960s gave way to a significant increase in the volume of research and a deeper understanding of the articulation of local communit…
