  • Decolonizing History Curricula Across Canada

Open Access•Sara Karn, Kristina R Llewellyn et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Education /…•2024

This study explores how K–12 history curricula across Canada currently address—and may better address in future—decolonizing imperatives. Following a consideration of the limitations and strengths of curricula in this regard, the article identifies five recommendations for (re)designing history and social studies curricula with decolonizing goals in mind: (1) challenge hegemonic narratives, (2) value Indigenous ways of knowing and being, (3) refl…

  • “Improvident and Profligate”

    Penney Clark•ARTICLE•Journal of Canadian Studies•2022

This article examines the politics and economics surrounding textbook provision in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan in the first decade of the twentieth century, a period in which debates around the publication and provision of textbooks raged in Canada. It focuses on the 1908 contract between the Saskatchewan Department of Education and the Morang Educational Company of Toronto involving the Alexandra Readers. Frederick Haultain, leader of …

  • Debates sobre enseñanza de la historia

    Open Access•Penney Clark•ARTICLE•Arbor•2018•References: 23

  • Preschools for Science

Open Access•Penney Clark, Mona Gleason et al.•ARTICLE•History of Education Quarterly•2012•References: 7

Although not entirely neglected, the history of preschool reform and child study in Canada is understudied. Historians have documented the fate of “progressivism” in Canadian schooling through the 1930s along with postwar reforms that shaped the school system through the 1960s. But there are few case studies of child study centers and laboratory schools in Canada, despite their popularity in the latter half of the twentieth century. Histories of …

  • New Possibilities for the Past

Penney Clark•EDITOR•BOOK•New Possibilities for the Past•2011

The place of history in school curricula has sparked heated debate in Canada. Is Canadian history dead? Who killed it? Should history be put in the service of nation? Can any history be truly inclusive? New Possibilities for the Past advances the debate by shifting the focus from what should be included in a nation's history to how we should think about and teach the past. Museum educators, secondary school teachers, historians, and history educa…

  • Getting Graphic with the Past

    Michael Cromer, Penney Clark•ARTICLE•Theory & Research in Social…•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 10

This article explores the potential of the graphic novel as a means to approach history and historiography in secondary school social studies and history classrooms. Because graphic novels convey their messages through the interaction of visuals and written text, they require reading that is across the grain. They have been likened to hypertext, a format with which students are increasingly familiar, because they are flexible and open-ended and c…

  • Arrestin-2 and G Protein-coupled Receptor Kinase 5 Interact with NFκB1 p105 and Negatively Regulate Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated ERK1/2 Activation in Macrophages

Open Access•Narayanan Parameswaran, Annie McKillop et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biological Chemistry•2006

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a recently described receptor class involved in the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity. Here, we demonstrate that arrestin-2 and GRK5 (G protein-coupled receptor kinase 5), proteins that regulate G protein-coupled receptor signaling, play a negative role in TLR4 signaling in Raw264.7 macrophages. We find that lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ERK1/2 phosphorylation is significantly enhanced in arrestin-2 and …

  • Murals as Monuments

Peter Seixas, Penney Clark•ARTICLE•American Journal of Education•2004•Cited by: 11•References: 9

Around the world people confront monuments that celebrate historical origins, movements, heroes, and triumphs no longer seen as worthy of celebration. While an analysis of these lieux de mémoire themselves can reveal historical consciousness, the sites become particularly interesting at the moment when they inspire debate, namely, when people ask what can be done with these artifacts of earlier power configurations, outdated modes of understandin…
