  • Opening the Ballot Box

    Open Access•Patrick P McHugh, Matthew Hinkel et al.•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2024•Referencias: 40

Northwestern football players were the first college sports team to participate in a union certification election. The NLRB declined to assert jurisdiction and the ballots were not counted. This paper examines the nexus of factors influencing voting patterns at Northwestern based on both survey data and extensive interviews. The findings affirm and extend those from prior union voting behavior studies. Here, however, intersectionality of race and…

    Open Access•Matthew Hinkel, Patrick P McHugh•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2022•Referencias: 31

Advocates for racial and economic justice are effectively using this moment to forge new shared understandings of our history and what it will take to build…

Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld, Patrick Mchugh et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1996•Referencias: 14

This analysis of 481 negotiations in Michigan over the period 1987-91 suggests that fundamental changes may have occurred recently in collective bargaining in small firms. Only 33% of the negotiations conformed to the traditional model of arm's-length collective bargaining; the balance involved either highly contentious or highly cooperative relations. Further, in only one-sixth (17%) of the cases was the contract settled within one week before o…

  • A Comparative Look at Dual Commitment

    Open Access•Celeste Sturdevant Reed, Willard R Young et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1994•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 33

North American scholars have had an historical interest in the extent to which workers can be committed to both their employer and their union. This is particularly relevant given the recent emphasis on greater labor-management cooperation as part of a competitive strategy. This paper reviewed the correlational literature concerning the relationship between company and union commitment. Meta-analysis procedures were applied to the results of 76 s…
