  • Arguments in the practical reasoning underlying constructed probability responses

    Open Access•Shawn P Curley, Glenn J Browne et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Reasoning is an important cognitive activity in probability assessment, and one that has been understudied. This proposition motivates the paper's three general aims. First, based on research in rhetoric, we present a theoretical means of analyzing the arguments constructed during the reasoning that occurs in probability assessment. Second, from verbal protocol data, we establish that subjects constructed arguments in forming beliefs and assessin…

  • Probability judgment accuracy for general knowledge. Cross‐national differences and assessment methods

    Open Access•Kathleen M Whitcomb, Dilek Önkal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•1995•Cited by: 4•References: 2

In this study we compare the probability judgment accuracy of subjects from the United States and Turkey. Three different response modes were employed — numerical probabilities, pie diagrams, and odds. The questions employed in the study were restricted to two‐alternative, general‐knowledge items. The observed pattern of differences in the components of probability judgment accuracy paralleled those of studies that have compared Western and Asian…

  • An evaluation of the reliability of probability judgments across response modes and over time

    Open Access•Kathleen M Whitcomb, Dilek Önkal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Despite the importance of probability assessment methods in behavioral decision theory and decision analysis, little attention has been directed at evaluating their reliability and validity. In fact, no comprehensive study of reliability has been undertaken. Since reliability is a necessary condition for validity, this oversight is significant. The present study was motivated by that oversight. We investigated the reliability of probability measu…

  • Psychometric Characteristics of a Preemployment Screening Device

    Open Access•William I Sauser, Jeffrey S Hornsby et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1988

Compu-Scan is a preemployment screening device which considers a job applicant's potential for such undesirable behaviors as substance abuse, theft, and violation of company policy to assign an over-all risk score. A “theft” subscale score may also be derived. This study assessed certain psychometric characteristics of Compu-Scan. Data provided by a private security firm included 445 completed Compu-Scans; 48 persons had also undergone an indepen…

  • The Relationship Between Organizational Size and Turnover: A Longitudinal Investigation

    Open Access•Philip G Benson, Terry L Dickinson et al.•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1987•Cited by: 4•References: 23

This research investigated the relationship between organizational size and turnover, using longitudinal data and time-series statistical methods. Four measures of turnover (accession rate, voluntary separation rate, involuntary separation rate, and mean tenure of those leaving the organization) were computed on a monthly basis for 65 months. After ARIMA modeling, each series was cross-correlated with a series based on organization size to invest…

  • Mixed Standard Scale Response Inconsistencies as Reliability Indices

    Open Access•Philip G Benson, Terry L Dickinson•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1983

The mixed standard scale is a rating format which allows researchers to count illogical (i.e., internally inconsistent) response patterns. These counts have been interpreted as an index of rater reliability, based on the notion that illogical response patterns reflect carelessness in responding. This study investigated the meaning of these counts, using 943 accountants as raters. It was found that the counts of illogical response patterns were no…
