  • Reporting reliability, convergent and discriminant validity with structural equation modeling

    Open Access•Gordon W Cheung, Helena D Cooper–Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Management•2024

Many constructs in management studies, such as perceptions, personalities, attitudes, and behavioral intentions, are not directly observable. Typically, empirical studies measure such constructs using established scales with multiple indicators. When the scales are used in a different population, the items are translated into other languages or revised to adapt to other populations, it is essential for researchers to report the quality of measure…

  • Accuracy of Parameter Estimates and Confidence Intervals in Moderated Mediation Models

    Open Access•Gordon W Cheung, Rebecca S Lau•ARTICLE•Organizational Research Methods•2017

Currently, the most popular analytical method for testing moderated mediation is the regression approach, which is based on observed variables and assumes no measurement error. It is generally acknowledged that measurement errors result in biased estimates of regression coefficients. What has drawn relatively less attention is that the confidence intervals produced by regression are also biased when the variables are measured with errors. Therefo…

  • Trouble at the next level

    Open Access•Anthony T Cobb, Rebecca S Lau•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 57

Leaders develop different exchange relationships with their followers ranging from higher to lower quality. As these exchange relationships increase in quality a number of beneficial outcomes often accrue to both the leader and the follower when examined at the individual level of analysis. At the work unit level, however, differential leader–member exchange (LMXD) can lead to structural schisms between subordinates receiving higher- and lower-qu…

  • Estimating and Comparing Specific Mediation Effects in Complex Latent Variable Models

    Open Access•Rebecca S Lau, Gordon W Cheung•ARTICLE•Organizational Research Methods•2012

This teaching note starts with a demonstration of a straightforward procedure using M plus Version 6 to produce a bias-corrected (BC) bootstrap confidence interval for testing a specific mediation effect in a complex latent variable model. The procedure is extended to constructing a BC bootstrap confidence interval for the difference between two specific mediation effects. The extended procedure not only tells whether the strengths of any direct …

  • Understanding the connections between relationship conflict and performance

    Open Access•Rebecca S Lau, Anthony T Cobb•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2009•Cited by: 9•References: 25

Research shows that relationship conflict has a negative impact on job performance. There is scant theoretical work, however, explaining the interpersonal dynamics that lead to this outcome. A conceptual model is developed that explores how relationship conflict impacts performance through its effects on trust and exchange. We argue that relationship conflict has a detrimental effect on trust motivating coworkers to rely more on calculus‐based tr…

  • Testing Mediation and Suppression Effects of Latent Variables

    Open Access•Gordon W Cheung, Rebecca S Lau•ARTICLE•Organizational Research Methods•2008

Because of the importance of mediation studies, researchers have been continuously searching for the best statistical test for mediation effect. The approaches that have been most commonly employed include those that use zero-order and partial correlation, hierarchical regression models, and structural equation modeling (SEM). This study extends MacKinnon and colleagues (MacKinnon, Lockwood, Hoffmann, West, & Sheets, 2002; MacKinnon, Lockwood, & …
