Managing Voluntourists
This study explores how sending organisations manage and coordinate voluntourists in voluntourism programmes. Through qualitative research, North-South voluntourism operations were explored by analysing publicly available organisational information and interviewing staff members (n=13) from (inter)national non-profit and for-profit organisations operating from Belgium or the Netherlands. Thematic analysis investigated managerial aspects and organ…
Voluntourism placements
This paper aims to contribute to the broader understanding of voluntourists’ impressions with voluntourism and how their experiences evolve throughout the volunteering process (pre-, peri-, and post-trip stages). Interviews of Belgian and Dutch voluntourists (n = 21) were analysed thematically, focusing on their overall experiences by questioning success factors, obstacles, and stakeholders’ roles. Results show that providing organisations, host …
Aren’t We Done yet?’ The Continued Relevance of New Public Management for Nonprofit Research
At the ISTR 2024 Conference in Antwerp, Belgium, the local host committee organized a dedicated research track on the impact of New Public Management (NPM) on the nonprofit sector. This special issue brings together some of the most promising contributions presented in this track. In this introduction, we outline the significance of the topic and highlight the contributions to this special issue
Feasible Institutions of Social Finance
This paper unpacks the continuum of social finance institutions (SFIs), ranging from foundations offering pure grants to social banks supplying soft loans. The in-between category includes quasi-foundations granting loans requiring partial repayment. In our model, SFIs maximize their social contribution arising from financing successful social projects, under a budget constraint dictated by their funders. We determine the feasibility of each SFI …
Beneficiary Participation in Non-Governmental Development Organisations
Beneficiary participation in development projects has been an important topic of debate during the last decades. In the empirical research on the matter beneficiaries themselves are seldom, if ever, asked about their perceptions of participatory mechanisms in place. We present such a (case) study on the Vietnamese local office of a European non-governmental development organisation, also probing into other stakeholders’ perceptions (46 interviews…
A Coalition Perspective on Nonprofit Governance Quality
We answer the call that governance research should focus more on processes outside the boundaries of boards, especially for nonprofit organizations. In particular, we suggest and elaborate concrete steps with respect to the advantages of a leadership coalition perspective to focus more on the behavioral and informal aspects of governance. Through a comparative case analysis of five nonprofit organizations, we explore contingencies between charact…
Exploring Board Interlocking Behaviour Between Nonprofit Organizations
Directors on boards of nonprofit organizations can have additional director positions in other nonprofit organizations. When several of these interlocking directors exist for a group of nonprofit organizations, a board network is formed. We investigate to what extent similarity between organizations in terms of size, funding structure and operational activities relates to the presence of shared board members between organizations. For a network o…
Seven Trade-offs in Measuring Nonprofit Performance and Effectiveness
To complement contemporary nonprofit literature, which mainly offers theory-driven recommendations for measuring nonprofit effectiveness, performance, or related concepts; this article presents seven trade-offs for researchers and practitioners to consider before engaging in a nonprofit effectiveness measurement project. For each trade-off, we offer examples and suggestions to clarify the advantages and disadvantages of methodological choices tha…
Optimal membership size and the governance of grassroots associations
This paper explores the link between membership size and the governance of grassroots associations. The issue of mission preference heterogeneity is highlighted and its effect on membership size is analyzed by developing a model and conducting a numerical simulation. An important finding is that the degree of heterogeneity of mission preferences in the potential member population has a negative effect on the optimal number of members of the grass…
Revisiting the Relationship between Personality and Psychological Contracts
For many nonprofit organizations, it is of the utmost importance to understand why some volunteers donate more time than others. This article examines how the Big Five personality traits relate to the amount of time donated by volunteers and proposes that transactional, relational, and ideological psychological contracts mediate this relationship. Moreover, this study examines whether the interaction among extraversion, agreeableness, and tenure …
Social Movement Structures in Relation to Goals and Forms of Action
This article describes a theoretical taxonomy of the structural features of social movements. We begin by using two classification criteria to analyze the types of relations that characterize the structure of social movements. From there, we look at how differences in structure relate to different goals and forms of action. We then derive a four-fold classification system based on formalization and hierarchy of relationships. For each classificat…
Autonomous Motivation Stimulates Volunteers’ Work Effort
Although today’s nonprofit organizations make a strong appeal to volunteers, they often have difficulties with attracting and retaining these free labor forces. In this sense, studying the motivation of volunteers and its effects proves useful. In the present article, we investigate the relationship between volunteers’ motivation and their self-reported work effort, while relying on the Self-Determination Theory. The results indicate a positive l…
Nonprofit Governance Quality
A nonprofit "governance quality index" was developed to enable verification and falsification of contemporary theoretical insights on social service organizations. Indicators were generated based on an extensive qualitative exploration. For the quantitative validation, a data set was composed of 526 respondents from 52 organizations. Five subdimensions of governance quality are introduced and are recommended to be used as separate scales, rather …
Volunteer decisions (not) to leave
In this article we test whether reasons to quit volunteering can be structured as the commonly used six functional motives to volunteer of Clary et al. (1998). We conjecture that owing to volunteer involvement in an organization, additional contextual factors influence the choice to stop volunteering for that organization. Based on a literature review and a qualitative exploratory analysis, we present items respectively measuring motives to volun…
A New Deal for NPO Governance and Management
Two major evolutions have been reported to occur in the nonprofit sector during the past decades. Both the nature of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) and of volunteering style are changing. While this creates challenges for NPO governance and management, little is known about the process or the outcomes of these two developments. We propose a two-dimensional conceptual model to explain how the aforementioned evolutions influence the attitudes and b…
Who takes a second chance?’ Profile of participants in alternative systems for obtaining a secondary diploma
In Belgium, the Exam Board (EB) and the Secondary School for Adults (SSA) are two different ways to attain a secondary diploma after leaving secondary school without a diploma. The SSA is part of the regular educational system and organises courses with an adult approach. The EB is a flexible system in which students prepare themselves to do exams. Using survey data, we examined the effectiveness of both systems in diminishing the large inequalit…
Dimensionality of the Pay Satisfaction Questionnaire
This study examined the underlying dimensions of the Pay Satisfaction Questionnaire to test whether the robust 4-factor structure (Pay Level, Benefits, Raises, and Structure or Administration) often established in the United States can be generalized to other countries and cultures as well. Data of 4 samples (for-profit employees, nonprofit nurses, cultural centre employees, and nonprofit teachers) were analysed with confirmatory factor analyses.…
Challenges in Managing Nonprofit Organizations
The topic of “management” and nonprofit organizations (NPOs) continues to fascinate scholars. This paper draws on varying theoretical perspectives to explore their respective contributions to our knowledge of NPOs. The two longstanding and contrasting disciplines of economics and sociology have contributed most, traditionally, to the study of NPOs. However, neither of these disciplines has resolved all the dilemmas associated with NPOs. The stand…
