  • Parenting Culture(s): Ideal-Parent Beliefs Across 37 Countries

Open Access•Gao-Xian Lin, Moïra Mikolajczak et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2023

What is it to be “an ideal parent”? Does the answer differ across countries and social classes? To answer these questions in a way that minimizes bias and ethnocentrism, we used open-ended questions to explore ideal-parent beliefs among 8,357 mothers and 3,517 fathers from 37 countries. Leximancer Semantic Network Analysis was utilized to first determine parenting culture zones (i.e., countries with shared ideal-parent beliefs) and then extract t…

  • Profiles of Parental Burnout Around the Globe: Similarities and Differences Across 36 Countries

    Open Access•M Matias, Joyce Aguiar et al.•ARTICLE•Cross-Cultural Research•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 38

Parental burnout (PB) is a pervasive phenomenon. Parenting is embedded in cultural values, and previous research has shown the role of individualism in PB. In this paper, we reanalyze previously collected data to identify profiles based on the four dimensions of PB, and explore whether these profiles vary across countries’ levels of collectivistic-individualistic (COL-IND) values. Our sample comprised 16,885 individuals from 36 countries (73% wom…

  • Toward Systematic Underwater Survey of Mediterranean Maritime Activity along the Southern Turkish Coast

Harun Özdaş, Justin Leidwanger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2022•References: 22

This study offers a methodology for field survey and analysis of artifact-rich contexts in near-shore waters. Faced with mixed deposition of fragmentary ceramics and other materials along the tectonically active southern Turkish coast at Kekova Adası, we combined rapid artifact counts, in situ object documentation, large-area photogrammetry, and selective artifact sampling. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of published shipwrecks and anchora…

  • Digital Emotion Contagion

Amit Goldenberg, James J Gro et al.•PREPRINT•2019

People spend considerable time on digital media, and during this time they are often exposed to others’ emotion expressions. This exposure can lead their own emotion expressions to become more like others’ emotion expressions, a process we refer to as digital emotion contagion. This paper reviews the growing literature on digital emotion contagion. After defining emotion contagion, we suggest that one unique feature of digital emotion contagion i…

  • Collective Emotions

Amit Goldenberg, David García et al.•PREPRINT•2017

When analyzing situations in which multiple people are experiencing emotions together – whether the emotions are positive or negative, and whether the situations are online or offline – we are intuitively drawn to the emotions of each individual in the situation. However, this type of analysis often seems incomplete. In many of the cases in which people experience emotions together, there appear to be emergent macro-level affective processes that…

  • Correlates of Gay and Lesbian Couples' Relationship Satisfaction and Relationship Dissolution

John Mordechai Gottman, Robert W Levenson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2003•Cited by: 45•References: 15

Physiological data were collected during the conversations and a videotape record was made. Couples viewed the videotapes and rated their affect during the interaction. The video records were coded with a system that categorized specific affe…

  • Knowing what you're feeling and knowing what to do about it: Mapping the relation between emotion differentiation and emotion regulation

Lisa Feldman Barrett, James J Gro et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition & Emotion•2001

Individuals differ considerably in their emotion experience. Some experience emotions in a highly differentiated manner, clearly distinguishing among a variety of negative and positive discrete emotions. Others experience emotions in a relatively undifferentiated manner, treating a range of like-valence terms as interchangeable. Drawing on self-regulation theory, we hypothesised that individuals with highly differentiated emotion experience shoul…

  • Revealing feelings: Facets of emotional expressivity in self-reports, peer ratings, and behavior

James J Gro, James J Gross et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1997•Cited by: 9

Drawing on an explicit model of emotion, we propose a multifaceted approach to emotional expressivity, defined as the behavioral (e.g., facial, postural) changes associated with emotion. Study 1 shows that self-reported expressivity has 3 facets (Impulse Strength, Negative Expressivity, Positive Expressivity). Study 2 shows that the same 3 facets emerge in peer ratings and that there are robust relations between self- and peer-rated expressivity.…
