A Framework for Analysis and Development of Augmented Reality Applications in Science and Engineering Teaching
As augmented reality (AR) becomes a promising technology for use in science and engineering teaching, the need for generally valid criteria and frameworks for the analysis, development, and setup of AR applications arises. In this article, we present an evaluations matrix to analyze current augmented reality approaches for life science teaching (biology, chemistry) and engineering and simultaneously provide directives for future augmented reality…

Emotional choices
In political history, emotions are booming. Two recent biographies, Susanne Schattenberg's Leonid Breschnew: Staatsmann und Schauspieler im Schatten Stalins (Berlin: Boehlau Verlag, 2017) and Friederike Schotters's Frankreich und das Ende des Kalten Krieges: Gefühlsstrategien der équipe Mitterrand 1981–1990 (Berlin: De Gruyter, 2019), illustrate this trend. While many of these publications are less concerned with the theoretical problems of measu…

The USSR and Permanent Neutrality in the Cold War
The Soviet view of neutrality was shaped by political rather than legal considerations. Whether neutrality was rejected or promoted by the USSR and how it was defined depended on the concept's usefulness for Soviet foreign policy. To advance Soviet interests, a special doctrine of neutrality was created with obligations that Soviet leaders apparently believed would draw the permanently neutral states nearer to the Soviet bloc. This article, which…
Ägyptische Archäologie im deutschsprachigen Raum. Tradition, Standard, Status und Ausblick
Field archaeological and archaeological methods in general are not classed as belonging to the core of Egyptology. As a consequence, Egyptology can neither participate in contemporary archaeological discussions, nor can it meet the demands of the increasing threat to antiquities in Egypt. Greater archaeological involvement could give an essential impetus to overcome traditional Egyptological views and limitedness.
Recognition in Return for Détente? Brezhnev, the EEC, and the Moscow Treaty with West Germany, 1970–1973
This article draws on Soviet archival documents as well as Western and Russian publications to analyze the background of Leonid Brezhnev's announcements of 1972 regarding the Soviet Union's possible recognition of the European Economic Community (EEC). The analysis takes into account various factors including the integration process, détente, and Soviet relations with West European states. The article shows that Brezhnev's first initiative toward…
Soviet Policy, Political Parties, and the Preparation for Communist Takeovers in Hungary, Germany, and Austria, 1944-1946
A large number of similarities can be seen between Soviet and communist activities following World War II in Germany and Austria and in East Central European countries such as Hungary, which were later entirely incorporated into the Soviet bloc. In both cases, Moscow-trained communists aimed at establishing “people’s democracy” and took a leading role in rebuilding the respective country’s adminis-trative apparatus. However, while they managed, w…
Stalin and Austria
This article reassesses on the basis of recently discovered documents from Russian archives Soviet planning and policy on and in Austria after World War II. Given its small size and its location at the periphery of the Soviet orbit, Austria never had a high priority for Stalin. Due to its quadripartite occupation by the allies, the country could not be claimed openly as part of the Soviet sphere of influence. However, Stalin and his officers trie…
