Machine learning‐based early warning model for adolescent mental health risk using the p factor
BACKGROUND: Accurate identification of adolescents at high mental health risk is essential for timely intervention and improved service delivery. The general factor of psychopathology (p factor), capturing shared variance across mental disorders, was used as a transdiagnostic outcome to develop a machine learning model for risk identification. METHODS: Data from 5,283 Chinese adolescents were used for model training and testing, with an additiona…
Reconceptualizing Technological Leadership: A Relational and Dynamic Framework
This article challenges conventional economic‐based understandings of technological leadership, which often conflate technological leadership with innovation capability or leading status in the technology sector. Instead, it develops a relational and dynamic framework for understanding technological leadership from an IR perspective. It introduces a novel typology differentiating leadership from leading, and followership from imitation and purcha…
Interpretation bias for ambiguous scenarios among individuals with high and low levels of empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and resonate with the emotions of others, typically requiring individuals to infer others' emotional status through the information around them. However, this information is often ambiguous and it is unknown whether individuals with high empathy have a bias in interpreting contextual information. Therefore, this study investigated how individuals with low and high empathy interpret other‐relevant scenarios in …
A New Synthesis among IR Theories? Moral Leadership in International Relations
There is currently not only a retrogression of the global economy and governance in progress but also one of international morality, which the growth of populism has destructed. Moral retrogression has yet to arouse the same level of awareness among policymakers and the public as has economic retrogression. Scholars like Yan Xuetong, Joseph Nye, and Richard Ned Lebow, however, have discerned this problem and its significance. This article compare…

Leadership and the rise of Great Powers
The ongoing confrontation between the United States and China has highlighted the current deficit in international leadership. A theoretical tour de force, Leadership and the rise of Great Powers by Yan Xuetong, which aims to explore international leadership and the mechanisms behind power transitions, could not be more timely. The book further develops Yan's previous works on moral realism and draws on political determinism in ancient Chinese ph…
Contribution of environmental forcings to US runoff changes for the period 1950–2010
Runoff in the United States is changing, and this study finds that the measured change is dependent on the geographic region and varies seasonally. Specifically, observed annual total runoff had an insignificant increasing trend in the US between 1950 and 2010, but this insignificance was due to regional heterogeneity with both significant and insignificant increases in the eastern, northern, and southern US, and a greater significant decrease in…
Forests dominate the interannual variability of the North American carbon sink
Understanding what drives the interannual variability (IAV) of the land carbon sink is crucial for improving future predictions of this important, yet uncertain, component of the climate system. While drivers of global and hemispheric-scale net ecosystem exchange (NEE) IAV have been investigated, our understanding of the drivers of NEE IAV at regional scales (e.g. sub-continental, biome-level) is quite poor. Here we explore the biome-level attrib…
Global land carbon sink response to temperature and precipitation varies with Enso phase
Climate variability associated with the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and its consequent impacts on land carbon sink interannual variability have been used as a basis for investigating carbon cycle responses to climate variability more broadly, and to inform the sensitivity of the tropical carbon budget to climate change. Past studies have presented opposing views about whether temperature or precipitation is the primary factor driving the …
Between poverty and prosperity: China’s dependent development and the ‘middle-income trap’
Despite China’s rapid economic growth in the past three decades, Chinese officials and experts are increasingly worried that the country is slowly heading towards the ‘middle-income trap’. The fear is that China might suffer the same stagnation and turbulence as Latin American economies did in the 1980s and 1990s. Will China be able to avoid this trap? Building on the insights of world-systems theory, this paper argues that China’s dependent deve…
Changes in the frequency and return level of high ozone pollution events over the eastern United States following emission controls
In order to quantify the impact of recent efforts to abate surface ozone (O3) pollution, we analyze changes in the frequency and return level of summertime (JJA) high surface O3 events over the eastern United States (US) from 1988–1998 to 1999–2009. We apply methods from extreme value theory (EVT) to maximum daily 8-hour average ozone (MDA8 O3) observed by the Clean Air Status and Trends Network (CASTNet) and define O3 extremes as days on which M…
