Chapter Two. Reflections On The Sociology Liberation Movement Of 1968
As the Radical Caucus in Sociology gathered in Boston on the 25th of August, 1968 the New York Times reported that the National Guard had been mobilized in Chicago and that 250 cargo jets were in waiting, these in advance of the opening of the Democratic National Convention and the anti-war demonstrations that had been prepared for it. Even before Rudi Dutschke, the German radical student leader, popularized an idea now often attributed to Gramsc…
Asia Comes to Main Street and May Learn to Speak Spanish: Globalization in a Poor Neighborhood in Worcester
This paper considers how and why an Asian enclave of small businesses has appeared in a poor neighborhood characterized by Puerto Rican and other Latino immigration in the post-industrial city of Worcester, Massachusetts. We begin by examining the role of the US in the world system, and argue that the US hegemonic role and specific political economic aspects of global capitalism (ie. deindustrialization) account for some of the migration stream. …
A Tale of Two Factories: Successful Resistance to Sweatshops and the Limits of Firefighting1
College-based U.S. anti-sweatshop activists led two solidarity campaigns challenging the proposition that global capitalism and capital mobil ity necessarily subvert local victories of workers and their unions. Critical to working-class advances are worker self defense, alliance with reformers, and positive governmental policy, but, in two cases, Kukdong/Mexmode in Mexico and BJ&B in the Dominican Republic, the third pillar of decency - public po…
Slaves to Fashion: Poverty and Abuse in the New Sweatshops
"A brilliant and beautiful book, the mature work of a lifetime, must reading for students of the globalization debate." ---Tom Hayden "Slaves to Fashion is a remarkable achievement, several books in one: a gripping history of sweatshops, explaining their decline, fall, and return; a study of how the media portray them; an analysis of the fortunes of the current anti-sweatshop movement; an anatomy of the global traffic in apparel, in particular th…
From Antisweatshop to Global Justice to Antiwar: How the new New Left is the Same and Different From the old New Left
In January of 1999 a new student movement announced itself on the cam-puses of American universities. It began a campaign for a sweat free campus and it did so in dramatic fashion by occupying over the next four months Administration buildings on seven campuses Duke (January 29), Georgetown (February 5), Wisconsin (February 8), Michigan (March 17), Fair?eld (April 15), and North Carolina and Arizona (April 21). In each case, the students demands …
Global Capitalism and the Flow of Foreign Direct Investment to Non-Core Nations, 1980-1996: A Quantitative, Cross-National Analysis
This paper updates an earlier quantitative cross-national study (London and Ross 1995) by examining a more recent time period and re-specifying the original model in a number of significant ways. These include the incorporation of measures of (a) International Monetary Fund penetration into non-core nations (demonstrating that IMF conditionality increases the flow of FDI), (b) the presence of “attractive investment opportunities” in nations (to i…

The Influence of C. Wright Mills on Students for a Democratic Society: An Interview with Bob Ross
Living the Global City: Globalization as Local Process
Politicians and academics alike have made globalization the key reference point for interpreting the 1990s. For many, globalization threatens both community and the nation-state. It appears to represent forces beyond human control. Living the Global City documents globalization's impact on everyday lives by drawing on research rather than rhetoric and arrives at a very different perspective. Living the Global City offers an analysis of globalizat…
Agency and Enlightenment: "Comment on W. Warren Wagar's "Toward a Praxis o f World Integration
However rare, a call to the secular and universal values of the Enlightenment is a special pleasure in an era of fractional identities where the dominant intellectual process is one which poses a "victim Olympics" as the highest form of analysis .That said, Wagar's assertion of the desirability of a "democratic, liberal, and socialist world commonwealth" would, should it actually become someone 's praxis, require an historic agent. Wagar leaves t…

Facing Leviathan: Public Policy and Global Capitalism
The capitalist system is to be understood as global rather than national. Rapid mobility has diffused manufacturing around the globe, increasingly to nations formerly considered peripheral sources of primary extraction. The large global enterprise (the multinational corporation or MNC) is the main, though not the only, institutional form and channel of this mobility. At the local level of metropolis and region the engine driving development and p…

Social Planning and Social Change
The Impact of Social Movements on a Profession in Process: Advocacy in Urban Planning
The process model of professions enables the observer to build internal conflict and change into an analysis of a given profession. An analysis of a new specialty in city planning—advocate planning—suggests that this model be extended so that social movements are seen to enter a profession through the creation of new specialties or segments. By showing that the new practitioners of advocacy planning were highly, though variably, influenced by soc…
Problems of Advocacy
The recent past has seen the erosion, and among some, the rejection, of social science neutrality and professional detachment. Among the typical expressions of a new professionalism is the underdog advocate, who wishes to lend his or her skills to the cause of less-than-equal groups in the society. The paper analyzes the problems confronting such advocates. The first is the discrepancy between career routes and success behavior on one hand, and t…
The New Left and the Human Service Professions
There are three characteristics of the New Left which had impact on social and human service professionals. Egalitarianism produced distrustof orthodox professional detachment from and power over poor and minority persons. The movement also gave expression to guilt, for some, over their "privileged" backgrounds. The New Left's decentralist views about power produced an orientation to local insurgency: the organization of neighborhood and communit…
