Televisual Experiences of Iran's Isolation
This essay examines the television viewing habits of Iranians since 2010, when the first of a series of crippling international sanctions were imposed on Iran after diplomatic efforts to curb the country's nuclear program stalled. Constituting Love in Persianate Cinemas
Critics have long regarded the popular cinemas of India, Iran, and Turkey as nothing more than cheap Hollywood knock-offs. While scholars have recognized the geographic and economic ties between these film industries, few have noted their engagement with themes and images particularly associated with earlier Persianate courtly entertainments. Persianate cinemas have challenged modernist ideas of love, marriage, and family life exemplified in Holl…
Girls' Dormitory
This article concerns representations of popular Muslim belief and practice in modern Iran. I discuss how the film, which some have reported is of particular appeal to young girls and women, engages with elite discourses on the essentially female charact…
Martyrdom and the “Good Life” In the Iranian Cinema of Sacred Defense
This essay investigates the place of cinema in the formulation and maintenance of an Iranian popular civil religion—reworking older ideas and practices largely taken from Islam to articulate with modern social and political change in Iran. Of particular interest is the theme of martyrdom in the Iranian cinema of sacred defense, originally conceived to depict the spiritual dimensions of the Iran-Iraq war (1980-88). I explore the foundational role …
