Presidential Address: The Lierature of the Last Half-century of the Constitutional History of the United States
In order to render my subject manageable, I have excluded from it the literature dealing with legal history, with the general history of political ideas, and with the constitutional and political debates that preceded and accompanied the American Revolution. Each of these is a large subject in itself and would, require for its most summary treatment a separate paper. I limit myself to what has been written during the last fifty years or so about …
Presidential Address: The leighs in South Carolina
‘M y Lord Somebody’, wrote a colonial pamphleteer in 1764,—‘My Lord Somebody has a friend, who has a cousin who needs a place, or stands in somebody's way, and so we may come by a governor.’ What was said, justly or unjustly, about governors was believed likewise of the lesser officers of the crown. My subject is the history of two of these placemen, Peter Leigh (1711–59), chief justice of South Carolina from 1753 to 1759, and his son Egerton (17…
Presidential Address: Council and Cabinet in the Mainland Colonies
The cabinet in Great Britain is an emanation of the privy council. The councils in the royal colonies upon the American mainland, like those in the West Indies, were, in the language of the royal instructions to colonial Governors, ‘our’ councils, and at the beginning of the eighteenth century there was a prospect of a like development overseas. Yet it did not occur. The offspring of the colonial council in America is the senate of the United Sta…

Presidential Address: Thomas Jefferson in American Historiography
‘The contradictions in Jefferson's character’, wrote Henry Adams, ‘have always rendered it a fascinating study. Excepting his rival Alexander Hamilton, no American has been the object of estimates so widely differing and so difficult to reconcile.’ He was, said Adams in another passage, curiously vulnerable, for he seldom wrote a page without exposing himself to attack. He was superficial in his knowledge, and a martyr to the disease of omniscien…

Some Aspects of The Recent History of American Historiography
My title is already long. Yet it does not say all that it should. My proper subject is certain aspects of the writing of American history in the United States during the last three-quarters of a century. But in order to deal with that I must say much that applies with equal force to American historiography at large during that period. In so doing, I run the risk of leaving, a false impression. There is a danger that I may suggest that the events …
