  • Neolithic cremation in south‐east Arabia

    Open Access•Adelina Kutterer, Adelina U Kutterer et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 14

Small fragments of cremated human bone, clearly representing numerous individuals, were found in a stratified Neolithic context in a small cave at Jebel Faya in the Central Region of the Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. With radiocarbon dates between 6500 and 5800 cal BC , they are among the earliest well‐documented cases of cremations in south‐west Asia. Taxonomic identification of the small burned bone fragments is based on morphologic…

  • Basics in paleodemography

    Open Access•Ursula Wittwer‐Backofen, Jo Buckberry et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2008•Cited by: 19•References: 38

Recent advances in the methods of skeletal age estimation have rekindled interest in their applicability to paleodemography. The current study contributes to the discussion by applying several long established as well as recently developed or refined aging methods to a subsample of 121 adult skeletons from the early medieval cemetery of Lauchheim. The skeletal remains were analyzed by 13 independent observers using a variety of aging techniques (…

  • Bone Microstructure and Its Hidden Information

    S Doppler, Gerhard Hotz et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2006•Cited by: 1

Human bone micromorphology gives clues to a variety of life history parameters, such as individual age, health status, and physical activity. In the course of an ongoing study, thin cross sections of femoral compact bone from three skeletal series are investigated for different purposes. The first series consists of 103 adult skeletons excavated from a 19th century hospital graveyard in Basel, Switzerland. Several disease- and stress-markers, lik…
