Choosing a Contraceptive: Method Choice in Asia and the United States
This book presents evidence from recent investigations of contraceptive method choice in a variety of countries focusing on Asia and the US. Included are discussions of psychosocial and economic approaches to understanding method choice descriptive and analytical analyses of choices and an integrative summary that concludes the volume. The 1st chapter sketches a framework for investigating contraceptive method choice. The chapters in part I descr…
Analyzing birth intervals: Implications for demographic theory and data collection
Analyzing fertility histories: Do restrictions bias results
The practice of collecting information on only the last closed and the open birth intervals results in a biased set of intervals. Given this bias, can analysis of these intervals provide unbiased estimates of the effects of socioeconomic and proximate variables on birth interval dynamics? Using an unrestricted data set, we examine the determinants of birth interval dynamics on both a set of unbiased intervals and a set of intervals that only incl…
Determinants of birth-interval length in the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia: A hazard-model Analysis
Differences in fertility levels can logically be attributed to differences in exposure to the risk of pregnancy and differences in the length of time between births when women are exposed. Exposure to risk varies primarily because the proportion of women cohabiting differs across populations, although in some populations sterilization removes from exposure a significant fraction of those cohabiting. This paper analyzes the determinants of the oth…
Measuring Mortality, Fertility, and Natural Increase: A Self-Teaching Guide to Elementary Measures
viii 44. Number of children ever born to married women living with husbands, by husband's occupation in 1969 and by color, for women 35-39 years old in 1970, and percentage of husbands in each occupational category: United States 108 45. Number of children ever born to married women, by family income in 1969 and by presence of wife in labor force, for women 35-39 years old in 1970, and percentage of wives in each income category: United States 10…
Intermediate Variables and Educational Differentials in Fertility in Korea and the Philippines
This analysis compares the effects of contraceptive use and infant and fetal mortality on the pace offertility in Korea and the Philippines and explores the mediating effects of these intermediate variables on educational differentials in childspacing. For birth intervals initiated in a recent period before a sample survey, second, third and higher-order intervals are examined. Transitions within successive segments of interval exposure (qxvalues…
The transformation of Korean child-spacing practices
In this paper the trend in child-spacing in Korea from the 1950s to the 1970s is examined by using a life-table approach and statistics from three separate surveys. Marked increases occurred in the pace of fertility at the lower parities, at the same time there were rapid declines in the pace of fertility at higher parities. A variety of factors brought about this mixture of trends. For example, the shortening of the first birth interval is partl…
The Euiryong Experiment: A Korean Innovation in Household Contraceptive Distribution
Although contraceptive practice has increased substantially in Korea as a result of a strong national family planning program, surveys indicate the existence of an additional unmet demand. A number of obstacles tend to limit availability of family planning services and supplies. The effects of total availability are being tested in a three-year experiment in household contraceptive distribution, for which an exploratory study was carried out in 1…
Family Planning Opinion Leadership in Korea, 1971
The characteristics of Korean family planning opinion leaders are assessed through a secondary analysis of the 1971 national survey conducted by the Korean Institute for Research in the Behavioral Sciences. In effect, what characterized Korean family planning opinion leaders was a rather national and democratic model. Those who had tried methods, discussed them, and knew a lot about them assumed leadership roles more than others. Place of residen…

Interpersonal communication and the diffusion of family planning in West Malaysia
Using data from a 1966–1967 probability sample of West Malaysian married women 15–44 years of age, this paper analyzes the characteristics of women who were active in diffusing information about family planning. The woman’s age and her parity, her educational attainment, her race, her present residence (urban-rural), and whether or not she wanted more children were significantly related to opinion leadership in bivariate tables. However, these re…
Marriage Patterns and Cumulative Fertility in West Malaysia: 1966–1967
Differentials in age at first marriage and being married more than once are discussed for a probability sample of West Malaysian currently married women 15–44 years of age. Both marriage ages and the incidence of multiple marriages vary greatly by race, place of current residence, wife’s education, and husband’s occupation; and the marriage variables are shown to have significant effects on the cumulative fertility of West Malaysian women. Early …
Recent fertility trends in West Malaysia
In the last decade, there has been a dramatic reduction in West Malaysian fertility. Between 1957 and 1966, official government statistics record that the crude birth rate declined from 46.2 to 37.3 -a decrease of nineteen percent.' Whereas comparable large fertility changes in Hong Kong in the years 1961-1965 were recently shown to be primarily due to changes in the age structure of the population, we believe that most of the decline in West Mal…
Awareness sources and stages in the adoption of specific contraceptives
Many factors affect the probability that a woman will use family planning. Summarizing his view of the major factors, Bernard Berelson stated: I've come to think that there are three factors, or clusters of factors, that are involved in the effective spread of family planning... They are (a) the nature of the society, from traditional to modern or modernizing; (b) the nature of the contraceptive method, from hard to easy; (c) the nature of the co…
