  • Tone anticipation in Gbanu (Gbaya)

    Open Access•Kenneth Olson•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2026

In Gbanu, anticipatory (“leftward”) tone spreading is more general than perseverative (“rightward”) spreading. This is one counterexample to the observation that perseverative spreading is more natural (Hyman & Schuh 1974). Leftward H-Spread (/HLH/ → [HLHH]) occurs regularly, including in monomorphemic words. Downstep results from the anticipatory spread of the second High, delinking the Low. Rightward H-Spread (/HL-T/ → [HHLT]) is rarer, and it …

  • Acoustic properties of bilabial trills in Medumba

    Open Access•Kenneth S Olson, Kenneth Olson•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2024

Olson (2022) claims that all bilabial trills in phonemic systems are releases of stops. They are either part of complex phonemes that involve stop-trill sequences, e.g. /pB, bB, mbB, tP/, or they pattern as allophones of a compressed or fricative vowel following a stop, e.g. [pʙ̩, bʙ̩, tʙ̩]. Olson notes that the stop-trill phonemes behave as obstruents. I provide acoustic evidence for this claim. Previous studies indicate that the closure of /b/ …

  • Curiosity and Need for Cognition

    Open Access•Kenneth R Olson, Kenneth Olson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

The present study hypothesized that individuals' need for cognition, which describes the dispositional tendency to engage in and enjoy thinking, would be related to questionnaire measures of curiosity for 148 adults. Scores on the Need for Cognition Scale were correlated with eight commonly used measures of curiosity of adults. With one exception, all values were statisically significant (mean r, .57) and added to the convergent validity of the N…
