The effect of emotional state on visual detection
This research explores the effect of emotional states on visual detection. Previous research has shown that emotional states characterized by an intolerance of uncertainty, such as anxiety, can affect performance on visual detection tasks. It is unclear, however, to what extent these effects are a result of increased perceptual ability, a decisional bias, or both. The present study used signal detection theory to determine whether uncertain emoti…
Memory for license plates
The ability of an eyewitness to recall a briefly viewed license plate is an understudied issue with great practical significance. Using large samples of adult participants (total N 1,859), we assessed the memory implications of a current proposal (EZ-ID, n.d.) to include a nameable symbol, such as a triangle or heart, on standard-issue license plates. In 2 experiments, no overall memory benefit was observed for license plates with symbols compare…
Modeling the effect of mood on dimensional attention during categorization
Classification is a flexible process that can be affected by mood. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the idea that mood may modulate categorization behavior through an attentional weighting mechanism in which mood changes the attention afforded to different stimulus dimensions. In two experiments, participants learn and are tested on categories while in a calm or sad mood. In Experiment 1, sad participants are faster to learn one- and two-dim…

Oral Language Instructions
A group of teacher-researchers took a bottom-up, in-depth look at instructional practices and beliefs about oral language and its assessment. Forty teachers and 63 students in beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses at a Colombian University's English program participated in the study. Instrumentation included questionnaires, follow-up questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observation. The pedagogical implications included a need for gu…
Temple Architecture and Sculpture of the Nolambas (Ninth-Tenth Centuries)
Nolambavadi is the historical regional name of territories controlled by the Nolomba dynasty from the late eight to early 11th centuries. The region has temple architecture and sculpture that warrant inclusion in art historical accounts but have received scant attention. This study fills the gap and offers the first comprehensive analysis of monuments built during the Nolomba period. This study provide a summary of the political history of the ar…
