Violent Protest, Contentious Politics, and the Neoliberal State
Azione insurrezionale collettiva: Una Analisi Della Dinamica Degli Eventi
This paper focuses on a conspicuously understudied form of radical-disruptive collective action: Insurrectionary Collective Action (ICA). Mustering evidence from the convulsive events that shook Greece in the aftermath of the unprovoked shooting of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos by riotous police in the centre of Athens in December 2008, we seek to conceptualize, interpret and explicate the ensuing social eruption employing (and seeking to fur…

Sur les sentiers de la colère: L'espace-temps d'une révolte (Athènes, décembre 2008)
The aim of the article is to throw some light on a particular form of political conflict, one which has till now has been little explored in theoretical terms : insurrectional collective action. While the article is an examination of the « events of the Greek December », taking these events to be a typical expression of this sporadic mode of collective action, its primary task is a conceptual one. Events of a similar nature are often interpreted …
The Coercive Impulse: Policing Labour in Interwar Greece
This article employs relational analysis to deal with the following question: since the Greek labour movement was organizationally weak throughout the interwar era, why was the state so tenacious in repressing it? Attempting to answer this question involves a brief account of the pertinent legislation, a sketch of the evolution of the security apparatus (paying particular attention to the role of the British Police Mission in reorganizing the Gre…
The European Employment Strategy Against a Greek Benchmark: A Critique
Despite the scholarly attention devoted to the European Employment Strategy (EES), its policy content remains elusive. This article first explores the ways in which the `open method of coordination', which departs from traditional regulatory approaches, tends to `depoliticize' the issue of employment, fashioning its discourse in an apparently technical language. This constitutes a serious shortcoming. There follows a systematic analysis of Greek …
Unemployment, Informalization and Trade Union Decline in Greece: Questioning Analytical and Prescriptive Orthodoxies
The first part of this paper briefly examines the merits of neo-classical arguments regarding the causes of the recent upsurge in Greek unemployment. By examining features of the Greek labour market (especially the large and eminently 'flexible' informal sector) it suggests that the experience of Greece casts doubt on the view that labour-market flexibility can serve as a cure to unemployment. The second, and major part, examines trade union decl…
Polarizzazione Partitica E Non-Proporzionalità Elettorale in Grecia
Polarization and Nonproportionality: The Greek Party System in the Postwar Era
This paper examines the evolution of the Greek party system in the postwar era. It is well known that parties are but a subsystem of a polity. Yet, by virtue of the fact that they constitute a central intermediate structure between society and government,' they provide invaluable clues for the understanding of the overall performance of this polity. Until very recently, research on parties was almost totally absent from modern Greek historiograph…
