Evaluating Willingness to Pay as a Measure of the Impact of Dyslexia in Adults
While much is known about dyslexia in school-age children and adolescents, less is known about its effects on quality of life in adults. Using data from the Connecticut Longitudinal Study, we provide the first estimates of the monetary value of improving reading, speaking, and cognitive skills to dyslexic and nondyslexic adults. Using a stated-preference survey, we find that dyslexic and nondyslexic individuals value improvements in their skills …
Longitudinal models of developmental dynamics between reading and cognition from childhood to adolescence
The authors applied linear dynamic models to longitudinal data to examine the dynamics of reading and cognition from 1st to 12th grade. They used longitudinal data (N=445) from the Connecticut Longitudinal Study (S. E. Shaywitz, B. A. Shaywitz, J. M. Fletcher, & M. D. Escobar, 1990) to map the dynamic interrelations of various scales of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children--Revised (i.e., Full, Performance, and Verbal) and specific marke…
Cognitive Correlates and Outcome of Cognitive, Behavioral and Physiological Treatments of Agoraphobia
The primary aim of this investigation was to ascertain the cognitive correlates and outcome of cognitive, behavioral, and psychophysiological treatments of agoraphobia. 39 severe and chronic agoraphobics with panic attacks, diagnosed using DSM-III criteria, were randomly assigned to one of the three cognitive-behavioral treatments: paradoxical intention, graduated exposure, or progressive deep muscle relaxation training. The effects of the treatm…
