  • Nudging law enforcement

Open Access•Gregory DeAngelo, Rainita Narender et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Law and…•2024

The effect of non-binding guidelines (nudges) on citizens’ compliance with law has been studied theoretically and empirically in behavioral law and economics. Less is known about the impact of non-binding guidelines on the behavior of law enforcement agents and prosecution. Our work fills this gap. We study whether non-binding guidelines affect law enforcement and prosecution practices when the guidelines are not necessarily aligned with legal ac…

  • The Costs and Benefits of a Local DNA Database

    Open Access•Gregory DeAngelo, Michael Krouse et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Benefit-Cost Analysis•2024•References: 1

DNA databases are useful tools for improving public safety. While past research examines the effects of national- or state-level databases, little is known about the distinct benefits of a local, District Attorney-run DNA database. Two key advantages of a local database are that (i) more local criminals submit a sample as part of a plea agreement (submission is not restricted to certain crimes and mandatory) and (ii) response times for identifyin…

  • Do civilian complaints against police get punished

    Open Access•Gregory DeAngelo, Matthew Gomies et al.•ARTICLE•Public Choice•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Law enforcement institutions are tasked with a complicated undertaking that involves maintaining community safety and, at times, making arrests while exercising care in their interaction with private citizens. Errors may have dramatic consequences for civilians, police and the criminal justice system. Given limited observability of law enforcement agents’ behavior, one way to mitigate the principal-agent problem is to rely on signals from civilia…

  • Police Response Time and Injury Outcomes

Open Access•Gregory DeAngelo, Marina Toger et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2023•References: 3

The delayed response of law enforcement to calls for service has become a hot button issue when evaluating police department performance. While it is often assumed that faster response times could play an important role in quelling potentially violent incidents, there is no empirical evidence to support this claim. In this paper, we measure the effect of police response time on the likelihood that an incident will result in an injury. To overcome…

  • Judicial Elections and Criminal Case Outcomes

Open Access•Gregory DeAngelo, Bryan Mccannon et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Legal Studies•2020

We investigate judicial elections’ impact on criminal case handling. We argue that judges face a trade-off between criminal and civil cases when exerting time and effort. During reelection, when the importance of good decision-making is heightened, if civil cases are sufficiently more important, then error rates in criminal cases increase. This effect is reversed for those who have a greater intrinsic motivation or handle only criminal cases. We …
