  • The Concept of Landscape and Sustainability

    Laura Fumagalli•ARTICLE•Comparative and Continental…•2025

In recent debates in ecology and environmental philosophy, the concept of landscape has been criticized and distrusted. One reason behind this is that aesthetic judgments of landscapes are often not in harmony with ecological concerns; for instance, damaged or polluted landscapes are sometimes judged as beautiful. In response to these critiques, I argue that a philosophical concept of the landscape can help us understand our relationship with nat…

  • Child labor among farm households in Mozambique and the role of reciprocal adult labor

    Open Access•Laura Fumagalli, Thomas Martins et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 15

We test the impact of a reciprocal adult labor program, Ajuda Mútua (AM), on child labor and schooling. AM was introduced into the province of Nampula in Mozambique, an area where farm production relies on child labor, potentially due to labor and financial market failures. Using difference in differences, we estimate that AM reduces child labor by eight percentage points. We argue that AM reduces child labor by providing low-cost adult labor and…

  • Household Earnings and Income Volatility in the UK, 2009–2017

Open Access•Avram, Mike Brewer et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic Inequality•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 3

We study the volatility of sources of individual and household level income in the UK in the years 2009-2017, following the Great Recession and government austerity. We find that the volatility of (pre-tax) earnings and disposable income has fallen for the working-age in this period, largely due to fewer negative and large earnings shocks. For older individuals, we also find a fall in the volatility of private income, mainly due to fewer positive…

  • Neighbourhood Ethnic Composition and Social Participation of Young People in England

    Open Access•Elena Fumagalli, Laura Fumagalli•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 19

We analyse how neighbourhood ethnic diversity and segregation affect adolescents’ social participation in England. We distinguish between participation in ‘purposeful activities’—such as sports and volunteering—and hanging around with friends. We suggest a novel identification strategy to address the problem of endogeneity of ethnic diversity and segregation. We find that ethnic diversity decreases hanging around, while ethnic segregation increas…

  • Can village savings and loan groups be a potential tool in the malnutrition fight? Mixed method findings from Mozambique

Open Access•Aurélie Brunie, Laura Fumagalli et al.•ARTICLE•Children and Youth Services Review•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Child malnutrition is a pervasive problem in sub-Saharan Africa that affects individual and national development. This article examines the impact of participation in village savings and loan (VSL) groups, alone and in combination with a rotating labor scheme called Ajuda Mútua (AM), on household and child nutritional outcomes in Nampula Province in Mozambique. It combines findings from an impact evaluation and a qualitative exploration of the dy…
